Mint state, original dark patina; in red gilt-blocked case of issue [this somewhat scuffed] £60-£80 --- Provenance: Bt Irene Allen March 2002. The British Empire Exhibition, staged on a 200-acre site at Wembley, was opened by George V and Queen Mary on St George’s Day, 23 April 1924; it closed during the winter months but by the time of its final closure on 31 October 1925 had attracted over 25 million visitors. Extremely fine and attractively patinated, with loop for suspension; a stunning plaque of extreme rarity £800-£1,000 --- Provenance: Bt Yates June 2017. Angela Isadore Duncan (1877-1927), b San Francisco, dancer and choreographer, pioneer of modern contemporary dance, moved to New York in 1896, then London and, by 1900, was in Paris; in 1904 she moved to Berlin, but was back in Paris by 1912 where she established a dance school that had to close at the outbreak of the Great War. By the close of 1914 she was back in New York, but opened a dance school in Moscow in 1921 before spending what were to be her last years in France. In 1924 she composed a dance routine, Varshavianka, to the tune of Warszawianka, a Polish socialist revolutionary song written in the early 1880s but which became the anthem of worker protests during the revolution in Poland, when 30 workers were shot during the May Day demonstrations in Warsaw in 1905

Extremely fine, as made, very rare £150-£200 --- Edition of 11. This work, which began as a conversation between two friends, takes the line from Pliny, nulla dies since linea, and reproduces text on speech bubbles, somewhat reminiscent of those on Gillray cartoons. Exhibited at FIDEM in 2004, BAMS then commissioned the artists to make a small number of medals, each of which incorporates differing texts on the speech bubbles, the texts being contributed by Society members

Artist unknown; and Sir Edward Thomason (British, 1769-1849); b. Birmingham ENGLAND, The Thomason Metallic Vase, 1821, a copper medal, unsigned, for E. Thomason, decorative vase on a pedestal, rev. a view of the base of the vase from a different angle, 54mm, 73.59g (BHM 1176; E 1160; cf. DNW M11, 1146). Very fine £20-£30 --- The original marble ‘Warwick’ vase, dating from the time of the emperor Hadrian and weighing some 3.5 tons, was excavated c. 1770. In 1788 the Earl of Warwick installed it in a special greenhouse at Warwick Castle, where it remained until 1979 and its purchase by Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries. Completed in 1821, Thomason’s copy was cast in iron with brass handles and a decorative finish; the medal records that work on it had begun in 1814. Sato, I. (Japanese, fl. 1900-1925) JAPAN, Key Coin Bureau, Osaka, c. 1900, a bronze plaque by I. Sato, view of the Mint buildings from the bay, rev. intaglio pastoral scene with young trees, a fence and shrine in the background, central panel with legend in 10 lines relating to Guanchuan, edge impressed in Japanese characters [Made at the Japanese Mint], 85 x 54mm, 116.11g (cf. The opening of the new mint at Osaka took place on 4 April 1871 in celebrations led by the new Japanese Prime Minister, Sanjo Sanetomi (1837-91). The decision to construct the facility and reform the coinage was originally taken in 1866, but after a plan to acquire equipment from France fell through, authorities purchased the entire Hong Kong mint from the British government and engaged those officials running it to establish the new facility at Osaka, a two-storey red brick building constructed by Irish architect and engineer Thomas James Waters (1843-98)

Pieters, house being submerged beneath flood water, rev. two men laying the final stone in a dyke wall, 108mm, 656.72g (De Geuzenpenning April 1954, pp. 20-1; BM Acq. 1983-7, pl. 110, 12; cf. Schulman 364, 1123). Extremely fine and as made, dark patina, very rare £100-£150 --- Provenance: Bt A.C. Eimer October 2005. The 1953 North Sea flood was caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland during the night of 31 January and 1 February 1953. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, resulting in extensive flooding. In the Netherlands over 1,800 lives were lost, as well as those of over 30,000 animals. Repairs to the system of dykes was not completed until November 1953
