LARGE MIRROR IN A 19TH CENTURY WATER GILT FRAME BY CHARLES MAYS & CO., LONDON.The large plate glass mirror is housed in a water gilt frame featuring a double layer of deeply molded acanthus leaf flanked by cove moldings, left and right. A 19th century paper label affixed to the back reads as follows; C.m May & Son, Gilders, Picture Frame Manufacturer, Steamworks 18 N. Annis Court, Soho, Pictures cleaned and restored. The company of C.m May and Sons, also the preferred framers to the famous portrait painter John Singer Sargent, ceased business in 1922. Additional 19th century paper labels identify this frame as having been part of the Royal exhibit at Manchester, held in 1851. The bronze locks, slide bolts and footed dowel locks to one end indicate this was originally an exhibition frame holding a work of art on canvas.Condition; Age cracking to gesso throughout with gilt rubs showing red bole clay and gesso underlayment.
