Lot 225
Hitler bust of Hitler executed in bronze^ approx 37cm high. Indistinct name of artist to base of verso^ but the name ‘Ferdinand’ can be discerned. This could be ‘Ferdinand Liebermann’ (1883-1941) who was Hitler’s favourite sculptor. It is known that the Liebermann bust of Hitler was exhibited at the 1937 Haus der Deutschen Kunst art exhibition after which 32 casts of the original were made at the orders of the Nazi Party. The present example certainly conforms to the look of the known examples of the Liebermann bust^ but it is not certain whether this is a later recast. The bust has been laid to a square marble plinth. There are a few marks but overall the bust is in fine condition.

A very rare Indian ivory Card Case, late 18th/early 19th century, carved on one side with a pagoda, flanked by three figures under coconut palms, the base with three top hatted figures on a triple arch, small figures at the foot and within leafy trees in which perch two birds, the other side with an arcade enclosing two hunters with each two hounds, the centre with a man and his wife beneath leafy swags, the top with three seated figures, small arrow-like birds drifting on most parts, the sides with dotted palmettes, 8.5 x 6.2cm The figures' dress would appear to be 17th century. The piece is very well carved and most of the iconography appears parallel with coconut carvings of the late 18th/early 19th century. The buildings bear a resemblance to those on some bidri wares, such as those on a 17th century huqqa base illustrated in Bronze, Silver & Gold from Mughal India, Mark Zebrowski, 1997, pls. 519 and 510 CONDITION REPORT: Tiny crack to top left hand corner. Small carving mark to opposing corner. Very faint crack to lower left of the upper section. Possibly, although we believe contemporary, a small splice repair to the interior section.

A good 'Satsuma' Vase, c.1870, of square section and after a Chinese Wanli bronze, the facets well decorated with a winged dragon amongst clouds and waves, the reverse with addorsed ho-o, between chrysanthemums growing from a banded fence or peony and bamboo, between false gadroon borders, traces of mark, 25cm The chrysanthemums growing from a banded fence, most commonly seen on Kakiemon porcelain and copied at the early English factories, feature in a poem by the Chinese Six Dynasties poet Tao Qian (365-427). The poem reads: 'I pluck chrysanthemums by the Eastern fence, And see the distant Southern Mountains'. CONDITION REPORT: A small part of gilt character mark remaining, along with blue shimazu mon. otherwise no obvious faults.

A Tokyo bronze Group of Paul and Virginie, c.1890, the boy seated on a rock kissing his girlfriend, dark patina, cast Genrusai Seiya zo, 41.5cm This bronze is after a European original, possibly Staffordshire Parian ware, an example of which is illustrated in The Parian Phenomenon, Paul Atterbury, 1989, no. 878, but the sculptor has given the lovers Oriental eyes. The novel, Paul et Virginie, was published in 1787 by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious faults.

A good Japanese applied-bronze Jar, c.1880, of drum form, depicting a panoramic view of the Temple of the Golden Pavilion, well applied with houses, boats and figures, the pavilions with sliding shutters, in silver, copper and gold and resting on three bracket feet, engraved Dai Nihon, Kyoto, Kin Kaku ju (Temple of the Golden Pavilion) Kosei saku, 11.5cm diameter CONDITION REPORT: Although called 'jar', this is somewhat untrue as the top does not remove, it is fixed. It is more like decorative stand of drum form. The interior with signature. No obvious faults visible.

A bronze Figure of a Girl, c.1890-1910, shouldering a basket, a small boy on a separate base by her side, both signed Seiya saku, both on a fixed carved wood base beneath an electric fitment, 39cm It seems probable that, although both figures and base are Japanese and of the same period, they were not intended to be mounted together. CONDITION REPORT: Possibly a marriage as the child figure bears no proportion at all to the female figure, otherwise no obvious faults.

A bronze Group, c.1885, of two tigers attacking an elephant, their skins appropriately patinated, cast (?) zan saku, tusks replaced, one tiger loose, 37cm CONDITION REPORT: 34cm long. Repair to top tip of elephant trunk. Tusks appear not to be ivory, and are replacements (not original). Front tiger 1.5mm section of tail missing to rear although not visible from the front. The upper tiger has inset glass eyes. The lower tiger with no glass inset eyes.
