An Unusual Bronze Group Depicting Ambika and Durga, Western India, 14th/15th Century, on arcaded rectangular base, each with four arms and an arched prabha behind surmounted by a kalasa, the former seated on her lion, clasping her child on her left knee, her other hands holding various attributes, the latter depicted slaying the buffalo demon (Mahisasuramardini), wielding a sword, shield and trident, 18cm (7 1/8in) high.Provenance: Collection of the Late Andrew Solomon, London, inv. no. A79. Purchased from Sotheby's London, 11 July 1972, lot 52. The original invoice is sold with this lot.Ambika and Durga are, with the other goddess Kali and Parvati, associated with the shakta cult, which flourished from the 9th century, focusing on divine female energy (Dictionary of Hindu Lore and Legend, Anna Dallapiccola, London 2002, pp.23 & 173).
