POLISHED BRONZE SCULPTURE OF A STANDING FEMALE WITH ARMS RAISED by Arthur Dooley (1929-1994), signed with initials and dated `77, 33cm high Please note: The sculptor of this figure also created `La Pasionaria` ( The Passion Flower), a stylised female figure situated on public realm in front of the Custom House, Glasgow, facing south across the River Clyde, representing Dolores Ibarruri, in a long dress, it is modelled standing with legs apart and arms raised. Dolores (1895-1989), was a Spanish communist who came to symbolise Republican resistance against fascism during the Spanish Civil War. The sculptor carved on the plinth Dolores` famous slogan - `better to die on your feet than live forever on your knees`. The phrase was first used by the Mexican revolutionary leader, Emiliano Zapata, but Ibarruri gave it new meaning when she used it during the miners strike in Asturias, Spain, in 1934.
