This sword is a surrender-sword acquired in Medan Sumatra in November 1946. The current owners father was stationed there with the RAF Mobile Signals Unit aged 18. In 1944 he was posted to Burma but his unit lost their kit in a train fire crossing India. By early 1945 they had been re-equipped and he served in ground-based mobile communications unit ending up in Ramree Island Sumatra; where fierce fighting continued with Indonesian rebels. It was in Medan he acquired the sword; as the Japanese oficers surrendered they placed all their swords in a large pile and he chose this one. Late in 1946 the British withdrew and he told of an incident of jumping dangerously from a landing craft to a ship carrying all his kit and this sword across his back. He carried it with him through a posting to Hong Kong before returning to the UK in 1947, the sword has always hung above the fire place and is now being offered for sale by his descendents.
