bronze, mounted on a wooden base Sydney Kumalo’s Large Seated Woman dates to 1965 and is a major work fromKumalo’s early period. The sculpture is one of a series of robust seated womenthat Kumalo produced while under the mentorship of the renowned gallerist,Egon Guenther. The earlier seated women date from 1959, 1960 and 1962. Theseries culminated in this relatively large and distinctive sculpture.Guenther cast nine of these sculptures from a complete edition of ten. Thiscast is signed with the artist’s initial 'K' and numbered 'VI/X'. The castingswere all produced by Vignali in Pretoria. A further four unnumbered castswere produced by Grosvenor Gallery in London and were cast by theLondon foundry, Fiorini and Carney. Edition number 'III/X' is included withinthe collection of the Iziko South African National Gallery. Edition 'III/X' wasexhibited at the SA Breweries Biennale in 1966 and was the winner of thecelebrated Arts Prize. The same cast was recently exhibited at Re/Discoveryand Memory at the Norval Foundation.Guenther’s attention to detail is reflected in the meticulous finishing andpatination of the work and the innovative design of the wooden base.- Gavin Watkins

Residue on her back. Worn down her right leg. h. 8 ½ in.; w. 3 ½ in.; d. 3 ½ in. Stamp "Master Craftsman Pompeian Bronze" on bottom. Ex. Carleton Collection.
Demetre Chiparus. Dancing Woman. Circa 1900s. Bronze, head and front piece possibly ivory; metal hands; mounted on marble base. Woman dancing with outstretched arms, wearing a unisuit. Enamel on hands is missing in parts. Hands are a tad loose. h.12 ¾ in.; w. 8 in.; d. 2 ½ in.; Signed "DH Chiparus" on base. Ex. Carleton Collection.
