WEISSMULLER JOHNNY: (1904-1984) American Actor, famous for his role as Tarzan in various movies. A rare vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 8 photograph by Weissmuller, the image depicting the swimming champion outdoors, standing on the deck of a boat, returning from Amsterdam after competing at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Weissmuller stands alongside his coach and few members of the US 1928 Olympic team wearing their swimsuits. Boldly signed in black ink (`Johnny Weissmuller´) across the image to a clear area. Individually signed above and beneath Weissmuller´s signature by all four members of the US team, comprising Walter Laufer, Helen Meany, Paul Wyatt and François d´Eliseu. The last adding a carefully written inscription to a Japanese delegation, thanking them for their help. The photograph has been neatly affixed to a slightly larger black cardboard. About VG £300-400Weissmuller won five Olympic gold medals for swimming and one bronze medal for water polo in the 1920´s. He was the first man to swim the 100 meter freestyle under one minute, won fifty-two U.S. national championships, set more than sixty world freestyle and backstroke records and was undefeated in official competition for the entirety of his competitive career. Weissmuller won two gold medals in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. Walter Laufer (1906-1984) American swimmer. In the 1928 Olympics Laufer won a gold medal as a member of the winning U.S. team in the men's 4×200-meter freestyle relay, together with Weissmuller, and a silver medal in the 100 meter backstroke. Helen Meany (1904-1991) American Diver. Meany competed in three consecutive summer Olympics, 1920, 1924 and in 1928 in Amsterdam where she won the gold medal in the 3 meter springboard competition. Paul H. Wyatt (1907-1970) American competition swimmer. Wyatt won in the 1924 Paris Olympics a silver medal in the 100 meter backstroke event and four years later, in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the same distance and style.
CESAR: (1921-1998) César Baldaccini. French Sculptor. A leading figure of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He is the creator of the “César de Cinema” trophy, which is awarded to the best in French cinema. Signed 8 x 4 photograph by Cesar `Amitié, César´, the image depicting one of Cesar´s main works `Centaure´. Signed in bold black ink to the right lower card border. Traces of glue affixing to the photograph. Matted in white to an overall size of 13 x 10 (33 x 25 cm). G to VG £250-350Le Centaure (1985) is a bronze sculpture by César, today at the Michel Debré square in Paris.
A pair of 19th Century French bronze and gilt brass mounted candle holders, formed as a classical style Roman or Grecian lamp, standing on rectangular marble base. The foot mounted gilt brass decoration in the form of foliate designs, the main body mounted with gilt brass fern leaf design and the handle surmounted with a gilt brass mythical creature and stylised acanthus leaf decoration, both holders have a gilt brass flower decoration to the spout. H=19, W=22cm
