Small bronze medal commemorating the return home of Admiral Lord Nelson 1800, obverse features Nelson's bust with pigtail and full uniform, ribbon and Star of Bath and medal around his neck, surrounded by the legend "Admiral Lord Nelson", reverse showing Nelson's ship nearing shore on which Britannia holds out a wreath towards him, legend reads "Hail! virtuous hero, thy victories we acknowledge and they God", further inscribed at base, "Returned to England Nov 5 1800". The medal by T Halliday (see Thomas A Hardy cat no 16). Information: In November 1800, Nelson returned to England owing to ill health, a few days later the new Lord Mayor of London was sworn in and presented Lord Nelson with a sword for his extraordinary services. Mixed Lot: Egypt campaign: bronze medal - Admiral Lord Keith and the death of Sir Ralph Abercrombie, 1801 by J G Hancock, obverse with uniformed bust of Lord Keith, reverse depicting a Scottish soldier by a funerary monument to Lord Abercromby (sic), 48mm diam; a bronze medal commemorating the action of Ile de Groix 1795, Admiral Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridport (1727-1814), the obverse depicting the Admiral's bust, in uniform, ribbons over right shoulder, legend "A A Hood, Lord Bridport, Admiral of the White", the reverse depicting Victory with one foot on a point of land, holding a Naval crown and several captured French flags with two squadrons on the horizon, inscribed "Off Port L'Orient & close to the French shore & batteries with 22 ships attacked and defeated, the French fleet of 32 ships. Three ships and 228 guns taken, further dated at base 23. D. June 1795, 48mm diam and a Admiral Collingwood and the Battle of Trafalgar bronze medal 1805, obverse showing a uniformed bust portrait of Lord Collingwood, the reverse with view of the British and French fleets, inscribed above "His Country's Future Hope" and below "Victory October 21 1805", 38mm diam. Info: Collingwood was promoted closely after Lord Nelson and was a firm friend. At Trafalgar he captained The Royal Sovereign and was second in command to Nelson, his ship was the first to break through the enemy lines. He has worked across different media, including oil painting and bronze sculpture, but he is renowned particularly for his figurative paintings in the impressionist style.Condition report: Size including the frame 84 x 99 cm. Oil on canvas which is unlined, the canvas is in plane with good tension. The paint layer is unvarnished and in a good condition overall. There is a light layer of dust and a few small accretions on the surface. The frame is slightly unstable with open mitres.
A Llama; and a Sheep with a Viscacha Blackboard sketches for a lecture on Tierra del Fuego charcoal and coloured chalk on paper (2) 101.5 x 135cmFootnote: Provenance: Chorley's, Gloucestershire, 'Sir Peter Scott Drawings, Prints, Books and Medals and other items, from the Estate of Lady Philippa Scott', 16th December 2010, lot 92 The only child of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and the famous sculptor Kathleen Bruce, Sir Peter Scott was a man of remarkable talent. He was a distinguished ornithologist, conservationist, wildlife artist, broadcaster, and an accomplished sportsman, notably winning a bronze medal in sailing at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was only two years old when his father died in the doomed Terra Nova expedition to reach the South Pole. Sir Peter took an interest in wildlife and natural history at an early age. He went on to study Natural Sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge, but graduated with a degree in Art History in 1931. He pursued his interests in the arts and wildlife, leading worldwide expeditions to remote places such as Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands. The following lots were originally drawn as blackboard sketches for one of the lectures that Sir Peter gave during such expeditions. Throughout the 1970s, he was a frequent lecturer on the Lindblad Explorer, an expedition cruise ship commissioned in 1969 by the Swedish-born explorer and pioneer of expedition tours, Lars-Eric Lindblad. The voyage to Antarctica started at the world’s southernmost city - Ushuaia - the capital of Tierra del Fuego. Sir Peter served as staff on board of the Explorer alongside other famous people in the expedition world – a fellow painter Keith Shackleton (who was distantly related to Sir Ernest Shackleton), the mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, and the prominent shark experts Ron and Valerie Taylor, among others. In 1951, Sir Peter married Philippa Talbot-Ponsonby with whom he shared his lifelong passion for wildlife conservation. The present blackboard sketches formed part of Lady Scott’s estate which was sold in December 2010.
