A large Sèvres [Louis-Philippe] pedestal vase, Vase 'Cratère': the frieze finely painted by Poupart with two named views 'Château de Tuileries' and 'Château de Twickenham' on a platinum and gilt decorated cobalt blue ground, on integral gilt-bronze stand, the panels signed A.Poupart for Achille Poupart and dated 1836, black stencilled crowned L.P.mark dated 1836, 32cm high, 39cm diameter [gilt-bronze handles lacking, loss to top of pedestal, long and short crack to bowl].*Notes In the early 19th century, the Château de Twickenham, known as Orleans House and the Octagon, was the residence of Louis-Philippe, Duc d'Orléans [King of the French from 1830-1848]. Two years after his death in 1850, it was purchased by his fifth son Henri, Duc d'Aumale and remained in the family until 1877. Apart from the Octagon and some surrounding buildings, the house was demolished in 1926.*Notes Literature 'The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory-Alexandre Brongniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847'. Page 287/90..."A first Crater Vase...blue ground views of the château des Tuileries and Wickenham [sic], slightly cracked, entered the sales inventory on April 30, 1836 and was delivered to the Grand Trianon on April 22, 1837 with production expenses of 1,043.75 francs; sale price of 1,000 francs. A second example, unflawed but otherwise identical, entered the sales inventory on September 10, 1836 and was "delivered to Her Majesty the Queen as a gift for M.Lelong the owner of Twickenham" on the following October 3. A third example entered the sales inventory on May 18, 1838 and the following July was delivered on Louis-Philippe's orders to his sister, Madame Adélaïde. Yet another example was entered on February 8, 1848; it may well correspond to the present design.
