Provenance: the collection of Jamieson Ritchie. Purchased by Bluett & Sons from Sotheby's, 27th October 1944, lot 69 for £7. A CHINESE BRONZE FIGURE OF LU DONGBIN LATE MING DYNASTY The immortal stands wearing long flowing robes bordered with lotus heads scrolls and foliage, with his hair arranged in a topknot and holding his hands together with his palms on top of each other, raised on a rectangular integral stand, 33.5cm. Cf. R Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, pp.80-5 no.64 and also M Maucuer, Bronzes de la Chine impériale des Song aux Qing, p.156, no.108 for similar figures. Lu Dongbin is one of the Eight Immortals honoured as a great poet and swordsman. In the present figure he is depicted as a scholar.

Vessels of this type have been excavated from several sites in China as far apart as Guangxi in the south and Hebei in the north.

A LARGE CHINESE GOLD-SPLASHED BRONZE YEN YEN VASE 17TH/18TH CENTURY The body cast in two sections, the lower section divided into three lobes and cast with ruyi-head motifs in high relief, the tall flaring neck with two thick rings above the shoulder and two chilong handles towards a broad rim, raised on a tall flared foot with applied studs, the brown patinated surface applied with gold splashes, together with a hardwood stand, 50.5cm.
