* Three Crystal Palace bronze medals, comprising `Crystal Palace, Sydenham, 1854`, conjoined busts of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with Britannia standing between the seated figures of industry and commerce by George Gamon Adams, another `Opening of Crystal Palace, 1854` bronze medal by Pinches, with Britannia between industry and science, and an Opening Bronze Medal with a bust of Paxton by L.C. Wyon, each 6.4 cm diam. in a red morocco leather case with gilt metal strap work tooled leather `C.P.C.` The medals were struck to commemorate the opening of the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, London, on 10th June 1854. Originally the building was erected in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 which was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton and then disassembled and erected at Sydenham in 1854. (3)

Battle of Britain. ... So Few. A Folio Dedicated to All Who Fought and Won the Battle of Britain, 10th July-31st October 1940, pub. 1990. together with ... So Many. A Folio Dedicated to All Who Served with RAF Bomber Command 1939-45, pub. 1995, both volumes having twenty-five profile portraits in silhouette of Battle of Britain pilots and bomber crewmen, each silhouette signed by the subject, with photographic portraits and other illusts., facsimile letters and documents, and a biography of each individual, a.e.g., orig. dark blue goatskin, lettered and decorated in gilt, `So Few` with RAF embroidered Wings inset to upper cover and `So Many` with bronze bas-relief by James Butler, RA, inset to upper cover, both volumes contained in individual silk-lined solander box, thick folio, plus a copy of the popular edition of each title, produced by W.H. Smith, and a file of related paperwork, all contained in purpose-made mahogany cabinet enclosed by hinged and lockable door with engraved plaque `... the Few and ... the Many` Both volumes numbered 28 of 401 copies, signed by Michael Pierce and members of the creative team. These fine volumes, with contributions by twenty-five surviving Battle of Britain pilots and twenty-five Bomber Command crewmen, were issued to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain and to recognise and celebrate the courage and heroism of the thousands of fighting men who stayed the westward advance of the Nazi menace, many of whom paid the supreme sacrifice. The volumes were produced for the benefit of the RAF Benevolent Fund and the auctioneers will also donate the buyer`s premium from the sale of this lot to the Benevolent Fund. * A Great War Casualty Group to Private L. Gamwell, Connaught Rangers, Killed in Action on the Western Front 3.9.1916, 1914-15 Star (3186 Pte L. Gamwell. Conn: Rang), British War and Victory Medals (3186 Pte L. Gamwell. Conn. Rang.), with Bronze Memorial Plaque (Luther Gamwell), extremely fine, sold with a large amount of research, including a photocopy of the war diary for September 1916 and copies of newspaper articles detailing the death of Gamwell 3186 Private Luther Gamwell, born in Rawmarsh, Rotherham, enlisted with the Yorkshire and Lancashire Fusiliers (14707) served in Gallipoli with the 6th Battalion, Connaught Rangers from 21.7.1915 and wounded whilst serving there. Gamwell was killed in action on the Western Front 3.9.1916, the Battalion Diary records that the battalion was drawn into position at 5am on the morning of the 3rd September and were to attack in three waves at about 8am the Artillery began to shell the German front line, unfortunately several fell short and by 12 Noon casualties numbered nearly 200. Gamwell is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. (4)

Worc.Yeo.), with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (William Christopher Clarke), extremely fine 2079 Private William C. Clarke, born Islington, London 1885, served with the Worcestershire Yeomanry in the Egyptian Theatre of War from 24.4.1915 and also in Gallipoli from August to November 1915, killed in action during the Battle of el Qatiya, Sinai, 23.4.1916, Clarke is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial. Brackley,comprising, Miniature dress awards for Distinguished Service Order, Distinguished Service Cross, 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals with M.I.D. oakleaves, Belgium Order of the Crown, Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, French Croix de Guerre with bronze palme, mounted for wearing in red morocco leather box, with discharge certificate (1.4.1918) bestowal documents for the Distinguished Service Order (8.6.1917) and Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, letters from the Air Ministry congratulating Brackley on becoming a member of the Order of the Rising Sun (29.5.1924) and being awarded the Czechoslovak Air Force Pilot`s Badge (11.5.1945), with supporting certificate, The Royal Aeronautical Society certificate (29.4.1948), plus a black and white photograph of Brackley wearing his miniatures, a souvenir copper ashtray engraved `Caudron 8290 4th Wing R.N.A.S. Dec 18th 1915, ñBrackley returned to Sheppey and was engaged on tests during wireless experiments. On 17th December flying Twin Caudron 3290 with Sub-Lieut. Rees, R.N.V.R. as passenger, he was on patrol to Detling and Sevenoaks for wireless test. At 1,500 ft there was cloud but he was soon above them: on returning clouds were thicker and after descending 500ft over Sheppey he could not find the aerodrome owing to thick fog. The outcome of this flight was two weeks in hospital for Bracklesî (BM p8), Certificate for Wounds and Hurts dated 17.12.1915, Brackley was injured on 17.12.1915 whilst attempting to land an aeroplane in fog, he suffered concussion of the brain, shock and wound of the upper lip, Two original London Gazette papers: D.S.C. London Gazette 12.5.1917 Flt.-Lieut Herbert George Brackley, R.N.A.S.`For conspicuously good work as pilot of a bombing machine.
