Conceived in 1978 and cast in an edition of 7.Provenance: Marlborough Fine Arts, London Literature: A. Bowness, ed., Henry Moore, Complete Sculpture, 1974-1980, London, 1983, vol. 5, LH 740 Although Moore had used the form of the horse as early as the 1920s, the present work is one of only a handful actually realised and also enlarged to a full-scale model, one of which is in the collection of the Henry Moore Foundation, Much Hadham in Hertfordshire. The sculpture demonstrates Moore's ability to reduce the form to its essentials. The smooth, undulating surface belies any hint at detail. Moore's treatment of the animal form is closely allied with his treatment of the human figure. Whilst the shape remains clearly identifiable, the overall impression is one nearing pure abstraction.
