** Ricky Swallow (b. 1974) - Standing Figure, 2012 bronze withbrown/black patina, from the edition of 2 (plus 1 AP), with integral cast plinth 25 x 6 x 5 in., 63.5 x 15 x 13 cm (height) Provenance: Modern Art/Stuart Shave, London. One of the most memorable pavilions at the Venice Biennale of 2005 was the Australian, for which Ricky Swallow exhibited a group of large sculptures carved in wood depicting skeletons, skulls, bicycle helmets and rattlesnakes. Seemingly borrowed from Old Master paintings, Swallow updated the Trompe L'Oeil aesthetic for today's audience. Since then, his interest in art history has branched out into Modernism and beyond, in step with his increasingly varied use of medium and experiments with process.
A Sardinian bronze figure of a worshipping offeror Nuraghian period, circa 9th-6th century BC; 11,6 cm (4,56 in) high; On a cylindrical bronze support for votive offering, the feet and the legs cast together and forming a pillar-shaped block, probably depicting an offeror in a hieratic pose, in the act of worshipping the gods, the right hand raised on the elbow bent, the thumb separated with the rest of fingers cast together, the now missing left forearm used for holding the votive bowl, her head with prominent nose and eyes, the extremely stylized and tube-shaped body wearing a long tunic over her petticoat and falling down above her feet, and a heavy mantle deeply and finely incised behind with geometric pattern. A spectacular Greek bronze figure of a striding Kouros 6th century BC; 12 cm (4,76 in) high; An outstanding figure of a Kouros, depicted nude, powerfully standing with his left leg advanced, well defined and broad shoulders, pectorals and rectus abdominis, the genitalia rendered, facial features and ears articulated with the coiffure elegantly tied in a fillet and arranged in vertical and horizontal striations with a long mass falling onto his back and six curls overhanging at the shoulders. For the style compare the bronze torso of a Kouros in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, Greece, Inv. 7533. Very rare. A Greek pilos helmet 4th-3rd century BC; 10,43 in (26,5 cm) high; Hammered from bronze sheet, conical domed in form, tapering to a point, distinct offset, a bronze lamina to reinforce the rim attached with pins, perforated two times on each side, likely for the attachment of cheek-pieces The first widespread adoption of the Pilos Helmet occurred in Sparta at the end of the 5th century BC. Before the Pilos Helmet was adopted in Sparta, they had predominantly used the Corinthian Helmet, which would have efficiently concealed their facial expressions. The Spartans argued that by adopting the Pilos Helmet they were exemplifying their bravery. The Pilos Helmet provided unhindered communication, unrestricted vision and mobility, and due to these characteristics, the Pilos Helmet were phased out in favour of lighter and stronger other helmets. A Sardinian bronze statuette of a worshipping warrior Nuraghian period, circa 9th-6th century BC; 9,8 cm (3,85 in) high; Standing figure of a worshipping warrior in a hieratic pose with the U-shaped support for the votive attachment and the feet cast, the right forearm projecting forward with elbow bent, wearing curving forward horns helmet with visor incised on his forehead and short tunic covering his body except the nude legs, the head with prominent nose and eyes, carrying a sword over the shoulder with a suspending shield boss attached above his back.
