A late 19th century French ormolu, marble and bronze mounted mantle clock, the dial signed Maple & Co., A Paris, the slightly convex white enamel dial with Arabic numerals and floral garland, the twin train movement striking on a bell, supported by a pair of putti, below a basket of flowers and pair of goats surmount, raised on four bun feet, 39cm high x 32cm wide.
An impressive late 19th century French bronze and marble clock garniture, the clock with a white enamelled dial bearing Roman numerals and floral garland, the twin train movement striking on a bell, supported by a floral garland being held by a winged putti sitting on a marble column, 54cm high, together with a pair of four light candelabra supported by putti, 50cm high.
An English bronze, ormolu and marble clock case: now fitted with a later French timepiece movement with replaced platform escapement, the round gilt-brass dial with black Roman numerals and decorative engine-turned decoration to the centre and blued steel moon hands, the white marble case with ormolu mounts and bronze reclining female figures to either side of the drum, surmounted by a cast ormolu eagle, height 30cm. A French bronze and ormolu mantel clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the backplate bearing the name of the retailer Maple and Co Ltd, Paris along with the trademark of the clockmaker Samuel Marti showing the award of the Medaille d'Argent in 1889, along with the serial number 1967, the white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals, fast/slow regulation above XII o'clock and fretted and engraved brass hands, the urn shaped bronze case with gilt-brass ormolu mounts, feet, bezel and swan neck handles, height 38cm. * Biography Maple & Co. were well known maker's and retailers of furniture from the Victorian period and produced many fine pieces including clocks, often using the movements made by the well-known Parisian clockmakers Samuel Marti et Cie. *Notes For details of Samuel Marti see lot no. 755

(RIC.552), bronze disease affecting the surfaces, otherwise very fine
G - German New Guinea, 10 mark, 1895A,, authenticated and graded by NGC as Mint State 65, Bird of Paradise, rev. denomination and date within wreath (KM.8; Fr.2); Jaeger.708. A one-year type - only 2000 specimens struck - and only 5 other examples graded MS65 or higher by NGC or PCGS. This very rare classic colonial issue of Imperial Germany was engraved and struck in Berlin, the famous Bird of Paradise being the work of Otto Schultz. Its artistry has been admired worldwide, and the two years of issue of the gold, silver and bronze pieces bearing this image are among the most sought by collectors of worldwide issues. This beautiful example is boldly struck, with unusually choice surfaces and rims as well as appealing golden yellow colour. Only a few exist at this grade level. A great coin!
† - Russia, White Army Revolution and Counter-Revolution (1917-1920), bronze 2 kopecks, 1898, authenticated and graded by NGC as Mint State 64 Brown, struck in 1917/18 as a trial piece, spread eagle within circle, rev. value within circle, date above, , exceedingly rare. *ex Farouk collection, lot 2545, part. ex Schulman Auction, 18-19 March, 1960, lot 3649. ex Numismatic Auctions, 30 November 2015, lot 777. The envelope accompanying this coin states:”struck as a trial piece in 1917/18 by General Denikin and his White Russian Armies. Denikin had German support and this trial coin was struck at the Berlin mint. In order not to be called a ‘counterfeiter’, Denikin had the coin bear a German instead of a Russian eagle, and the legend is in mirror script, retrograde!! Date on coin, 1898. A one kopeck was sold in the Mihailovich Sale, and there are about 4 or 5 different trial pieces of this kind in existence.” There are 3 examples graded MS64 by NGC or PCGS.
