Small figures such as these were offered at shrines during the Archaic Period in Ancient Greece. A bronze figurine or idol modelled in the round with short arms extended to the sides, knees flexed, triangular beard (or beaked headdress?), slit to the genitals. 13 grams, 39mm (1 1/2"). Acquired on the German art market in the 1990s. The figure may represent the god Freyr who is sometimes depicted with a short goatee beard. The slit to the groin may have been for attachment of a separately modelled phallus. Fine condition. [No Reserve]
