From an old London collection, formed in the 1980s. Known as a Gaumukhi Shringi, this is a ritual vessel for pouring libations over a statue of a deity. The name Gaumukhi means cow's mouth and relates to the glacier in the Himalayas of the same name, the source of the river Ganges. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Cast bronze horn in the shape of a Makara; the animal has an open mouth with elephant's trunk above and tusks to either side; there are two horns on the head and the body is decorated with scales and bands of floral motifs; towards the mouthpiece, and near the neck, is a small ring for attaching a carrying rope. 325 grams, 52cm long (20 1/2"). Private collection, London, UK; acquired prior to 1990. A Makara is a mythical animal associated with water and fertility. Horns such as this are used in religious processions.
