A CHINESE BRONZE DAOIST TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER AND COVER QING DYNASTY OR LATER With an ovoid body decorated with a row of characters and star constellations to the shoulder, a band of taotie masks to the neck, and with two phoenix head handles with rings to the sides. The base with a bagua mark, all supported on three tall legs, the cover with reticulated trigrams and surmounted by a qilin, together with a wood stand, 32cm, 7.5kg. (3)

A PAIR OF CHINESE GILT BRONZE BUDDHIST LION DOGS MING DYNASTY Seated on their haunches with their heads turned, their ears flat and each with one paw resting on a brocade ball, the hair of the manes and tails picked out in fine detail, 18cm, 3.7kg. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Sir Beilby Alston (1868-1929), the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to China (1920-1922), and by repute gifted to him by the last Emperor of China Pu Yi, and thence by descent.

A CHINESE BRONZE RETICULATED INCENSE STICK HOLDER YUAN/MING DYNASTY With cylindrical body, two dragon-shaped handles and reticulated decoration with quatrefoil and cash-shaped openings and four figures of Immortals with attributes cast in high relief, all supported on three short feet, 16cm, 425g. Cf. R Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, pp.29-30 no.16 for a related tripod incense stick holder.
A CHINESE KNIFE WITH A CLOISONNE SCABBARD AND JADEITE HANDLE QIANLONG 1736-95 The scabbard decorated with stylised bats amidst clouds on a turquoise ground, the gilt bronze mounts with key fret bands, 27cm. (2) Provenance: from the collection of Mr George Athenogenes, London. The use of knives at meals was a mark of Manchu identity. When eating sacrificial pork, men and women were expected to cut up their own meat. Knives and other eating utensils often formed part of the dowries of princesses.
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze mount formed as male genitals with peg above, spurs extended to each side. Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 433 for type. 14 grams, 29mm (1 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. 1st-2nd century AD. A bronze handle attachment in the form of Medusa with leaf decoration at handle attachment; a stern face with long wavy hair, protruding wings and snakes emerging at the forehead and tied below the chin. 205 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Property of a lady living in Kent, UK; formerly part of her grandfather's collection; acquired in Germany after WWII; thence by descent 2006. Very fine condition.
3rd century AD. A bronze finger ring with incised zigzag to the D-section shank, ellipsoid bezel with inscription 'VIRTI' (belonging to Virtus"). Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 262 for type. 6.43 grams, 23mm overall, 17.60mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7 1/4, Europe 15.0, Japan 14) (1"). 1st-3rd century AD. A group of five bronze chariot fittings all with tapering conical shafts incised with horizontal bands, right-angled arm and rounded finial. 483 grams total, 58-66mm (2 1/4 - 2 1/2"). 1st-2nd century AD. A large flat-section bronze plaque with hole to each corner, segmented face with inset panels of millefiori glass. See Sumner, G. 1st century AD. A matched group of three bronze bow brooches, each a rectangular headplate with lateral flanges, three collared knops, deep bow, trapezoidal footplate, pin attached to a loop on the reverse, catch below.
