Garlake, The Sculpture of Reg Butler, The Henry Moore Foundation in association with Lund Humphries, Aldershot, 2006, pp. 18, 19 and 162, no. 224, fig. 4, illustrated (another cast)Illustrated Catalogue of Acquisitions 1984-86, Tate Gallery Publications, London, 1988, p. 117, no. T 03703 (another cast)'After the 1963 Hanover Gallery exhibition Butler read Le Musée Imaginaire by André Malraux (1901-76) and renamed the group in tribute to Malraux, who had conceived the musée imaginaire as 'the 'Museum without Walls', whose local habitation is solely in the mind of each of us'. The bronzes, mostly modelled in wax, with some heads in carved plaster, recall objects for play, for handling, for the imagination, dream figures too far removed from everyday sculpture to exist on any but the private scale of the small room in which they were made, where he set 'each one in a recess in the wall formed by a blocked-up window whose dimensions eventually become those of the display cabinet'. All were conceived as female although many of them are far from human in appearance, as if made to resemble primitive objects. Retrospectively Butler expressed 'irritation with...neo-primitive sculpture. I felt that all the major 20th century figure sculptors were living on the emotions of long-dead cultures making cult objects for non-existent societies'. Initially he intended to sell the figures separately, but after devising the box frame he decided to sell them only as a complete group.' (M.
