Spagnoletti`; Exposition Universelle Internationale MDCCCLXXVIII [1878], bronze, unnamed; International Inventors Exhibition 1885, bronze, unnamed; Exposition Universelle Paris 1889, bronze, unnamed; and Academie Parisienne des Inventeurs Industriels et Exposants, undated, bronze, unnamed, (6). Charles Ernest Paolo della Diana Spagnoletti (1832-1915) was an electrical inventor who became Chief Telegraph & Signal Engineer of the Great Western Railway. His disc signal telegraph or block instrument was first employed by the Metropolitan Railway in 1863 and was adopted by the G.W.R. the following year. He also advised on the use of electricity on the City & South London Railway which, in 1890, became the first deep-level underground railway.
