"CARNATION, 26cm high, 25cm diameter; together with an associated black-painted wood wall mount and hook (2) Provenance: By repute, the property of William Fairchild, thence by descent. Footnotes: Note: William Fairchild (1918-2000) was an English author, playwright, actor, and director.  He was educated at the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and served as a naval officer on HMS Warspite during the Second World War. The bell in the present lot may have been from the Azalea-class sloop HMS Carnation launched in 1915 (c.f. a similar bell from HMS Ark Royal sold at Gorringe's, 30 March 2021, lot 34, £1,600), in which case it may have been a gift to William's father who was active as a surgeon in the First World War. Alternatively, the bell may have been from the the flower-class corvette HMS Carnation commissioned on 16 October 1940, leased to the Royal Netherlands Navy from 26 March 1943 - 4 October 1944 when it was renamed Hr.Ms. Friso, and then decommissioned sometime before July 1945, in which case the bell may have been a gift to William from a representative of either the Royal Navy or the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Commissions executed by Reid Dick are now held in such prestigious collections as the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Collection, and the Tate.Also known as The Struggle, this sculpture epitomises Reid Dick's roots in the New Sculpture movement and is clearly influenced by Leighton's work Athlete Wrestling with a Python. That commission was awarded to Vernon in open competition in January 1926 and was left incomplete when he died of pneumonia in 1930. The remaining siblings helped to finish it and it was unveiled in 1939. Elsie sculpted various portrait busts, including Churchill and Beethoven.

ROME 1859, 20.7cm high, 23cm wide, 10.4cm deep    Provenance: The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson.       Footnotes: Note: A similar example sold at Sotheby's, Billingshurst, 20 April 1999, lot 578.Holme Cardwell was born in Manchester, before moving to London and attending the Royal Academy School in 1834.  He was admitted to the Royal Academy following graduation and exhibited several portrait busts between 1837 and 1840.  Cardwell eventually moved to Rome, where he lived off and on for the rest of his life, studying and continuing to produce busts and sculptures in the neoclassical style. Condition Report: In overall good condition. Having an even patina through with minor dents, marks and surface scratches commensurate with age and handling. Lacking base.

The vendome statue was replaced with one of Napoleon draped in a Classical toga, and eventually was installed at the Cour d’Honneur at the Invalides on March 11, 1911, where it still stands today.
