A LIFFE blue and red cotton trading jacket, 1990s, labelled 'Laurence Highman, London', embroidered with 'LIFFE' to front pocket and back; together with an orange 'runner' jacket; another in red worn by a 'local' and a copy of 'Celebrating 30 years of LIFFE', chests approx 112cm, 44in (4) The London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange (LIFFE, pronounced 'life') was established by Sir Brian Williamson in 1982. By 1996, after various mergers, it had become the biggest futures exchange in Europe. These jackets would have been worn by traders in the 'open outcry' trading pits; a form of stock exchange made virtually extinct in the late 90s due to electronic developments. In 1997, having reported a profit of £57 million, a bronze statue of a smirking LIFFE trader, wearing his jacket and clutching a mobile phone, was erected outside of their offices opposite Cannon St station. Tony Blair is photographed celebrating with LIFFE traders, wearing their orange and red jackets, this same year. However in 1998, the company reported a loss of £64m, and on Friday 24th November 2000, at 5pm, the last three of the once 26 'open outcry' pits were permanently closed. Five days earlier, in an article entitled 'No longer LIFFE as we know it', the BBC reported the imminent closure: 'Many of the colourful and loud-mouthed traders at London's Liffe exchange have barked their last trade'. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition.
