A George V Edward Medal, Second Class (Bronze) to James Short, named and cased, London gazetted 2nd October 1917, with relevant contemporary press cuttings and certificate from the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust. A rare civilian gallantry award. *In the early hours of the morning of the 28th November 1916 at Pye Hill Colliery, Nottinghamshire, three men were buried following a roof fall. James Short, of Riddings, was one of five men who, under continuous roof falls, attempted to dig the trapped men out. After seven hours, the men were located, however all were found to be dead. All five of the rescuers, including Mr Short, were awarded the Edward Medal, which they received in person from the King on 20th October 1917. The Rescuers were also enrolled on The Carnegie Roll of Honour and received a £10 gratuity.
