λ An 18th century Anglo-Indian rosewood and ivory tea chest, the hinged top with a caddy moulded edge with ivory banding decorated in lac with scrolling leaves and flowers, with a bronze swing handle and a central tree, the interior with a plush lining and three divisions containing two cut glass and silver lidded canisters, each engraved with the coat of arms of the Egerton family, the front with an engraved escutcheon, c.1770, Vizagapatam, 14cm high, 22.6cm wide, 12.8cm deep. The coat of arms are for the marriage of William Egerton (1726-1783) to Mary Kirke (1727-). They had six children. The Egerton family were important landowners. One of the family was made Viscount Brackley, later Earl of Bridgewater. Another became Duke of Bridgewater and pioneered the construction of many of Britain's canals. The Egertons own Tatton Park, Cheshire.
After the antique. A Grand Tour bronze inkwell, the lift-off top in the form of Spinario revealing a glass inkwell, the oval plinth base cast with trophies of war, on a marble base, late 19th century, 20.8cm high. Provenance: Purchased from Mark Sullivan. From the collection of Sir Michael Codron.
A pair of Louis XVI bronze terms, in the form of naked Bacchanalian figures of a man and a woman each with a grapevine in their hair, both draped, he with a lion's pelt on tapering stems, decorated with a mask and an ewer, musical instruments and trophies, the backs stamped '16 922' and initials 'T.F.',79cm high, 40cm wide. A Dutch polished bronze lavabo, with a swing handle and female mask terminal lugs and with mythical beast spouts, together with two holy water pails, both with a swing handle, one inscribed with initials 'D M T', probably 16th century, 14.9cm high (max). λ A French kingwood and Vernis Martin serpentine vitrine in Louis XV style, with bronze mounts with a cupboard door enclosing a plush lined interior with a glass shelf with four panels painted with figures and cherubs, the front two hinged revealing a secretaire compartment with a pair of drawers and a leather lined writing surface, late 19th century, 167.5cm high, 74cm wide, 38cm deep.
Hunting interest. Two novelty cold painted bronze car mascots by Louis Lejeune, one of a standing fox wearing hunting apparel, the other of a fox riding a hound, both stamped 'LEJEUNE, LL, MADE IN ENGLAND', first half 20th century, 14cm high (max). After Charles Antoine Coysevox (French 1640-1720). A 19th century bronze model of the crouching Venus with a draped turtle, mounted on a rouge griotte marble plinth, 35.7cm high. The original marble was delivered in 1686 for Louis XIV to grace the Chateau de Marly. Coysevox was pleased with his creation that he inscribed the piece Phidias as well as his own name.
A Regency mahogany wine cooler, of sarcophagus shape, inlaid with stringing and with outline mouldings, the interior with a lead lining and eight divisions with two further open compartments, with a bronze lion's mask ring handle and bronze paw feet and brass castors, 49.3cm high, 48cm wide, 53.3cm deep.
After Louis Julien (Jules) Franceschi (1825-1893) Egyptian revival patinated and gilded bronze figure of The Goddess Isis seated on a sphinx holding the Ankh, the Egyptian key to truth, her left hand holding flowers representing the growth of life. The statue comes with typed manuscript explaining its symbolism (H 63.5x W32x max depth 22cm).
