Spearhead. Luristan, Iran 1000 B.C. ca. .Bronze.Measurements: 28.5 cm (h.) .Luristan also known as Lorestan. Any of the bronze horse ornaments, implements, weapons, jewellery, belt buckles, and ritual and votive objects probably dating to about 1500-500 BC that have been excavated since the late 1920s in the Harsin, Khorram?b?d and Alishtar valleys of the Zagros Mountains in the Lorestan region of western Iran. Their exact origin is unknown. Scholars believe that they were created by the Cimmerians, a nomadic people from southern Russia who may have invaded Iran in the 8th century BC, or by related Indo-European peoples such as the early Medes and Persians.
Figure of Hercules. Etruria, 3rd-1st century BC.Bronze.Measurements: 7.5 cm.Round sculpture made in bronze in which the figure of Hercules is represented, judging by the abdominal torso and the posture in action that he presents, as well as by the skin of the lion of Nemea that hangs from his arm and the nail in which he raises victoriously. The hero brings one of his feet forward and stretches out one arm, while he draws the other over his shoulder in a throwing attitude. Herakles is the most famous hero of Greek mythology and perhaps also of classical antiquity. His name derives from the goddess Hera and the Greek word "kleos" (glory), i.e. "glory of Hera".
Figure of the goddess Bastet. Ancient Egypt, Late Antiquity, 664-323 BC.Bronze sculpture on a wooden base.Provenance: Former private collection, Toronto, USA.In good condition, unrestored.Measurements: 16 cm (height); 16.5 cm (height with the spike).Splendid round votive sculpture made in bronze, representing the goddess Bastet in her feline form. The animal is shown seated, leaning on its hindquarters, with its forelegs erect, its head raised towards the front, its ears pointed upwards and its tail encircling its right thigh towards the front. It is in an expectant position, at the same time watching what is going on around it. This is her classic representation in Egyptian art. Bastet or Bast was the goddess protector of the home and symbol of joie de vivre, considered the deity of harmony and happiness. Equivalent to the Greek Artemis, she was depicted as a domestic cat or as a cat-headed woman, carrying a sistrum to indicate her love of music. She was considered the personification of the warm rays of the sun, as well as the embodiment of the peaceful aspects of goddesses such as Sekhmet, who represented the evil qualities of the sun. As the eye of Atum (creator and sun god), she was associated with the moon and protected births and pregnant women. From the time of the Ancient Empire, she was considered the mother of the pharaoh, whom she helped and protected in order to reach heaven. Her cult had one of its most important centres in the city of Bubastis, where hundreds of mummified cats in her honour are found.
Mirror from the Roman Empire, 1st-3rd century AD.Bronze.Measurements: 17.5 x 9 cm.Roman mirror made entirely of bronze, with a hand decorated with mouldings and a smooth disc. Apollo; Rome, 1st-2nd century AD.Bronze.Measurements: 8 cm.Roman bronze statuette representing Apollo standing in a naturalistic posture, with a muscular and naked body. Son of Zeus and Leto, Apollo is a complex deity, perhaps the most venerated in classical antiquity after his father. He was the god of divine distance, who protected or threatened from on high, was identified with light and purification, as well as being the patron of the most famous oracle of antiquity, that of Delphi.
Roman hand mirror, 1st - 3rd century AD.Bronze with bone handle.Measurements: 16.5 x 10 cm.Hand mirror from the Roman period, made of copper in a circular shape with a carved bone handle, decorated with the Roman swastika symbol. The most significant of the personal-care items was the mirror. It could be rounded, in the Etruscan tradition, or square, a very common and widespread model throughout the Empire. Traditionally, mirrors were made of metal - bronze, copper, silver and gold - and had handles finely worked in metal, bone or ivory. According to Pliny the Elder, the most important mirror factory was in Brindisi, although in later times glass mirrors eventually replaced metal mirrors.
