Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal for successful rescue (Captain Edward J. Collins (sic), 19 September 1884), GVF, (claw slack). In its original case of issue. Plate 1 Note: Edward J Collings, Captain of SS Commerce, was awarded this medal for saving from drowning the life of a man at Sutton Pool, Plymouth. “The Star” newspaper of Guernsey Nov 4th 1884 relates Captain Collings was “.distracted from his sleep, by cries of drowning, and rushing on deck had to scramble across three vessels and then dive into the pool in the dark to save the man,” apparently the pool had “a large amount of sewage.poured into it and he might have been suffocated”.
