An originalem, leicht verschmutztem Band. Die Rückseite mit der Trägerdedikation "The Congress to Sergt. John Hanna Co. B 14th Vet.Res.Corps of Escort to Remains of President Abraham Lincoln April 1865". John Hanna wurde hierfür die Congressional Medal of Honor "In testimony of his faithful and exemplary conduct as one of the escort to the remains of President Lincoln to Springfield, Ill." verliehen. Sgt. John Hanna - a Congressional Medal of Honor as one of the escorts of the deceased President Abraham Lincoln, April 1865 Sgt. John Hanna - a Congressional Medal of Honor as one of the escorts of the deceased President Abraham Lincoln, April 1865Bronze embossed five-pointed star (Army, first model) with one point facing downwards, bearing the engraver's signature "Paquet F.". Eagle suspension device, two suspension rings, top bar, and brooch also made of bronze. Original, slightly stained ribbon. The reverse featuring the dedication "The Congress to Sergt. John Hanna - Co. B 14th Vet.Res.Corps of Escort to Remains of President Abraham Lincoln April 1865". Width 53.3 mm. Total weight 29.68 g.Introduced as highest decoration for valor by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861 during the American Civil War, the Medal of Honor has been awarded to approximately 3,500 soldiers to date. Just a few days before the Confederate troops under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered to General Sherman, the previously re-elected President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth in the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. on 14 April 1865. He died of his injuries the following day. Lincoln's body was taken from Washington D.C. to Springfield, Illinois, in a special funeral train accompanied by an honor guard, which also watched over the coffin during the mourning processions that took place in all large cities, such as New York or Chicago. All members of the guard, among them Sgt. John Hanna, received the Congressional Medal of Honor for this service, "In testimony of his faithful and exemplary conduct as one of the escort to the remains of President Lincoln to Springfield, Ill". The Congress later revoked the award, however, as it had not been earned by virtue of demonstrating courage and fearlessness in mortal danger in battle facing an enemy.Condition: II -
