A Japanese bronze figure, of a monkey, 14 cm high Condition report Report by GH There does not appear to be a mark or signature on the piece. In terms of condition, the bronze is in good condition with a dark patina and no evidence of damage or repairs. There is age related ingrained dust and dirt. The figure was probably at one point, fitted with glass eyes, which are no longer present. Also in the right hand, there is an object that appears out of place, and is possibly a later edition, this unscrews and can be removed. Overall presents well.

He trained as an architect; his most famous building being the Pirelli Tower in Milan built in 1958. However Ponti also designed furniture, flatware, vases, sculptures, set designs at La Scala and was editor of the influential Domus magazine. His daughter Lisa wrote that he could regularly work an 18 hour day. His sculpture Letizia meaning "Happiness" was a design from the 1920s and is typical of his more lyrical style of that era.

Publ. Bond & Coyne Association 2005. Dora Gordine : sculptor, artist, designer by Jonathan Black and Brenda Martin 2007 Born in Estonia, Dora Gordine (1895 - 1991) achieved critical acclaim in 1926 with her bronze Head of a Chinese Philosopher exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries. She married Richard Hare and in the 1930s they built Dorich House in Kingston, South West London where she lived until her death in 1991. Dorich House is now a museum housing a permanent collection of her work and her husband's extensive collection of Russian Imperial Art. Her work is also on display in Tate Britain and Tate Modern. A modeller rather than a carver Gordine's work engages key themes of portraiture, iconic "racial" heads, and the occasional mask. She was a contemporary of Jacob Epstein and exhibited with him in 1928 at the Leicester Gallery. Baby's Head, one of her pieces at that exhibition, is close in concept to Epstein's earlier models of Baby Asleep. Dora Gordine's work at the Tate reflects her importance as a major presence in 20th century European sculpture.
