Jean-François-Théodore Gechter, , a patinated bronze model of an angel Jean-François-Théodore Gechter, (French 1796 - 1844), a patinated bronze model of an angel, portrayed kneeling, her beatific visage lifted in the manner of a Lyssipian gaze, her hands clasped before her, the wings folded behind, with an open volume resting in front of her, on the naturalistically cast base, inscribed 'T.GECHTER 1841' to one side, 33cm high, 18cm wide Gechter spent most of his life living and working in Paris. He studied under Bosio and Gros, and exhibited his own work at the Salon from 1827 to 1844, becoming a Chevalier of the Legion of Honeur in 1837. He sculpted numerous heroic figures and bas-reliefs for public statuary, as well as portrait busts of his contemporaries, but his friendship with the great Barye led to an interest in later life in animalier sculpture too
