A 16th century Spanish bronze mortar, with four lugs, one perforated with a rope-twist handle, with eight panels of letters 'P O V O N R S O', c.1530-40, 8cm high, 12cm wide. A very similar mortar was discovered on the Punta Cana, Hispaniola shipwreck in 2011, sold at Wilkinson's. Provenance: A private collection.
