*Amundsen (Roald). A portrait plaque of Roald Amundsen, the rectangular bronze uniface plaque by IL Rui of Oslo, showing a bust to the left of Amundsen, the dates below of his principal explorations to the North West Passage, South Pole and North Pole, 47 x 77mm, extremely fine and scarce Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872-1928), was a Norwegian explorer, who led the Antarctic expedition of 1910-12 which was the first to reach the South Pole, on 14 December 1911. In 1926, he was the first expedition leader for the air expedition to the North Pole. In 1928 while taking part in a rescue mission in the Arctic seeking missing crew for the airship Italia, Amundsen's aircraft disappeared along with Amundsen and 5 crew members. (1)
