Mene was a prolific animalier sculptor of the 19th Century. He had a reputation for high quality work, being awarded the Cross Legion d'Honneur for contributions to art in 1861, and first class medals at the London Exhibitions of 1855 and 1861. His work is clearly influence by Landseer and these particular sculptures were originally cast in 1861 and 1864 respectively (Please note condition is not noted. The surface is generally varied with green - grey areas and rubbing wear and dirt and general exposure to the elements having previously been living outside. One with concrete to the underside. Otherwise, inevitable scuffs, scratches, dents and marks commensurate with wear, use and age.

AFTER THE ANTIQUE; A LIFE SIZE CARVED MARBLE FIGURE OF THE FARNESE HERCULES19th century, carved in contrapposto, modelled with lion pelt, club and apples, 182cm highThe Farnese Hercules is probably one of the most famous images of the mythic male hero imprinted upon Western culture. Standing three meters tall, the Farnese version of Hercules was carved in the early part of the 3rd Century AD and placed in the Roman Baths of Caracalla to be recovered 1546. It was based upon a much earlier Greek bronze figure, dating back to the 4th Century BC which was finally lost in the sacking of Constantinople in 1205 by the Crusaders. Despite his strength, Hercules is depicted standing wearily, leaning on his club hewn from a mighty olive tree plucked from the ground, with the skin of the ferocious Nemean lion beneath his arm, who he'd fought and killed as one of his first Labours. In his opposing hand, held behind his back, are three golden apples stolen from the Garden of the Hesperides, one of his final tasks.

A large bronze award medal, Britannia seated l. surrounded by female figures bearing the proceeds of Art, Science, Industry and Agriculture, a lion in thew foreground. Reverse '1862 Londini Honoris Causa'. L.C. Wyon F. named to the rim 'Chappell & Co Class XVI'. 7.5cm. (Eimer 1553). Class XVI was for musical instruments. Chappell and Co were well known at the time for publishing sheet music and manufacturing pianos. With a similar 's ociete Internationale Forrestier et Miniere Du Congo' medal, 8.5cm and a medal celebrating Jacques Cousetau by R. Duboc, 9cm. (3 medals). *CR First with edge knocks and slight marking to surfaces. Second good, third with light surface marks.
