BronzeIndia, Orissa, 19th century Dimensions: Height 11 cm by 10 cmWeight: 179,1 gramsA bronze figure of Durga slaying the Buffalo Demon (Mahisasuramardini), Bengal or Orissa, the multi-armed goddess holding various weapons, stabbing him with the trident. The special characteristic of this bronze is the lined pattern covering the base and body parts of each creature, giving it a very distinctive look. In her most important manifestation, the Hindu Goddess is known as Durga. Generally, she is depicted in combat with a demi-god called Mahishasura, which also means „buffalo demon“. The basic iconography is similar to that of the Iranian deity Mithra destroying the bull and symbolises the triumph of good over evil, or truth over falsehood.

Usually the Citipati is a pair of a female and male skeleton intertwined in a dance. He is also known as the Master of the Cemetary and one of the 75 forms of the Mahakala. The skull is grinning widely, the eyes are large and round. Wavy cracks cover the skull. Fiery ornamental waves are extending from between the teeth and meet on top of the skull. These masks were also used as protection at entrances. They are also a reminder of impermanence and constant change.

The Mahakala is the fierce emanation of the Bodhisattva of compassion and helps to overcome obstacles on the way to enlightenment. He is wielding a sword in his right hand, the other is raised in front of the chest with the index finger pointing to the sky. He is wearing a short dhoti and jewellery, a large garland hanging down on his belly, armlets, anklets and big circular ear pendants. The face has a menacing look. The hair is done up in a big bun, a three-pointed tiara on the head. The backside shows the Mahakala's negative relief.

Attached to a square plinth, the Buddha is sitting with his legs crossed in lotus position. He is dressed in a robe with beaded brim draped over his left shoulder and bottom fanning out underneath his ankles. The eyes are closed in deep meditation. A hairline separates the tiny curls from the forehead, and he is wearing a simple crown with a jewel in the center and over the ears.

Here he is seated in padmasana on a double reverse lotus throne with beaded rim. He is wearing a long dhoti with beaded stripes fastened at the hip with a decorative waistband. He has four arms, two are joined together in front of the chest, holding the wish-granting gem. The other two hands are raised, his left is holding a lotus flower, the right one has the thumb and index finger touching, formerly holding a mala. The eyes are closed and the expression calm in deep meditation. The urna or third eye is depicted as a rectangular stone on the forehead. The black hair is done up in a bun and is decorated with a fine tiara. Big circular earrings adorn the elongated earlobes. The Bodhisattva's whole body is adorned with beaded jewellery and necklaces highlighted with numerous stone inlay. The bottom of the bronze is sealed.

Bronze giltTibet or Nepal, 15th centuryDimensions: Height 19 cmWeight: 1450 gramsA seated Buddha in dhyanasana on a double reverse lotus throne with beaded rim, the bottom lotus petals are longer than the upper ones. The Buddha is gesturing the bhumispharsa mudra, calling the earth to witness. He is dressed in a long robe with double beaded brim draped over the left shoulder, the end fanning out decoratively underneath his ankles. The body is slender, the face oval with downcast eyes and gently smiling lips. Thin wavy eyebrows stem from the nasal root. The head with the tiny, black curls is decorated with an elegant tiara with ribbons flowing on the side. The ushnisha is topped by a diamond jewel finial.

Bronze gilt with semiprecious stonesTibet, 16th centuryDimensions: Height 18,5 cmWeight: 1084 gramsAlso called the primordial Buddha and can be translated as "The Vajra Bearer". Here seated in padmasana on a double reverse lotus throne with beaded rim and larger lotus petals on the bottom. He is shown with his two arms crossed in front of the chest, one holding a vajra, a thunderbolt ritual weapon, and the other one holding a ghanta, a temple bell. An elaborate five-pointed tiara encloses the high chignon topped by a vajra. He is clad in a wavy robe and decorated with armlets, necklaces, jewellery, earrings, bracelets, all highlighted with stone inlay. A thin scarf is draped around his arms. The expression is serene, a stone inlay also decorates the urna.

Bronze gilt with silver inlaysTibet, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 18 cmWeight: 241 gramsUnusual shrine of a Bodhisattva on a rectangular plinth with decorative bands, open-work support with stone inlay at the center and a round reverse lotus base with beaded rim. The Bodhisattva is seated cross-legged with soles of feet showing, wearing flowy garments covering the legs. The shoulders are also dressed with decorative robes, the upper body seems to be dressed in aristocratic clothes with a chest-armour and puffy sleeves. The hands are raised in front of the chest, showing the dharmachakra mudra. The face looks juvenile with a light smile and downcast eyes, earlobes elongated. The Bodhisattva is wearing a pompous crown of stone inlay. He is surrounded by a big flaming aureole with additional stone inlay, his head also bears a halo in the same fashion with a lotus flower at the top center. The back of this outstanding bronze is relatively plain.

In spite of some rub off, the smiling lips and closed eyes are still visible on the face, the earlobes are slightly elongated. The body has the shape of a pear and is dressed in a long garment with floral incised pattern. The torso is decorated with armlets, bracelets, a large necklace and a flower garland. He is holding the gem-spewing mongoose in his left hand and a citrus fruit in the right with index and little finger stretched. The face is round with small features, downcast eyes, calm expression, a raised urna on the forehead. He wears large circular ear pendants and a five-pointed tiara. His chignon is topped by a lotus bud or diamond. Jambhala is found in five principal colours, black, yellow, white, green and red. He can appear as a king, peaceful, semi-peaceful or semi-wrathful and wrathful.

He has a relatively broad face with small features, a raised urna in the center of the forehead. The chignon is enclosed by a tiara.

Dressed in a flowy robe covering the right shoulder, no jewellery at all. He is touching the earth with his right hand, bhumispharsa mudra and holding a small vessel in his other hand. The Buddha used this gesture when he attained enlightenment under the bodhi tree. His earlobes are elongated and bear stretched-out ear holes, the face is smiling with downcast eyes, a raised urna between the eyebrows. Tiny balls cover the head and ushnisha which is topped by a lotus bud finial.

The throne is made of a double reverse lotus flower attached to a thin surface and two lions stand on the flower, supporting the throne on the side. The Buddha is holding his right palm upwards resting on the knee, left hand is raised also palm facing to the sky. The robe is covering his torso and legs forming waves. The ears are elongated, the face is smiling widely, the eyes are open and attentive. The hair and ushnisha is black.

Bronze fire-gilt on silver base with cold gilt facesTibet, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 31,5 cm by 20,5 cmWeight: 2734 gramsTranslated as "The Wheel of Bliss", Chakrasamvara is one of the main Tantric Buddhist deities in Tibet. Here standing in wide stance with his left leg bent, the right leg stretched in alidhasana, on two prostrate bodies on a lotus base with beaded rims. He is shown in yab-yum position with his consort Vajravarahi, embracing her with two of his twelve arms, showing the vajramudra and holding the dorje and ghanta. The other arms are fanning out to the side holding various ritual implements. His lower body is adorned with a net of skulls and severed heads weaved together, jewellery and a skull tiara. The expression is fierce with angry eyes and teeth showing. The consort is wrapping her legs around his waist. She is holding a curved knife in her right hand and a skull cup in her left. Together, they signify the perfect union of wisdom and compassion.

The body is adorned with necklaces, armlets and anklets. The head is comparably small and the face is created very finely, with downcast eyes. He is dressed in an elaborate robe with decorative brim over a long undergarment fastened at the waist with an ornamental band and bow. The face is round and fleshy with two necklines, the eyes are downcast, the lips and nose are small, the earlobes slightly elongated. The head and relatively small ushnisha are covered in tiny curls. The Buddha bronze is hollow.

Bronze fire giltTibet or China, 18th centuryDimensions: Height 11 cmWeight: 812 grams An Arhat, or Luohan in Chinese, is a disciple of Buddhism who has achieved true enlightment, but not the higher stage of Nirvana. This Luohan is seated with one leg tucked in, the other bent with the left hand holding a brush resting on the knee. The surface he is seated on is round and has incised ornamental patterns. In the right hand resting on the leg he is holding a rectangular object, probably a Buddhist script. He is dressed in a wide garment with ornamental brim fastened around the waist with a bow, a patterned scarf around the shoulders. The chest is adorned with beaded jewellery with turquoise stone inlay. The face is calm and friendly, with black curly hair at the back and a goat beard.

The two hands are placed in each other in the lap, dhyana mudra, holding the Vase of Longevity containing the Amrita nectar, therefor also called Amrita Vase. He is adorned with lots of jewellery, the high chignon and hair also decorated with a plaque and chains.

Two hands are joined in front of the chest, anjali mudra, the other two are raised at the back holding a lotus flower and prayer beads. The face has a calm expression with downcast eyes, decorated with a five-pointed tiara enclosing the head of Amithaba Buddha. Guanyin is the embodiment of compassion.

The hands are crossed in front of the chest holding the temple bell ghanta and thunderbolt vajra, vajramudra. His face is calm, elongated earlobes with large pendants frame the face. A raised urna is in the center on top of the eyebrows, the hair is visible underneath the elaborate tiara enclosing the chignon topped by a vajra prong. Vajradhara literally means "The Vajra-Holder" and is the primordial Buddha.

Three lotus flowers are sunken into the ground before him. The Buddha has twelve arms. The lowest pair is resting in the lap holding a bowl with amrita nectar. The second pair of hands gesture tarpana mudra sprinkling ambrosia into the bowl. The third pair in abhaya mudra is raised in front of the chest. supports the bowl in his lap. The fourth pair is holding a mudra with thumb and small finger touching. The fifth pair is also outstretched with rounded hands, thumb touching index finger. The sixth pair is joined above the head in uttarabodhi mudra, gesture of enlightenment. The Buddhas head is relatively small with fine facial features, almost closed eyes and with a peaceful expression. The head is adorned with an elaborately designed crown. The whole body is also adorned with jewellery, which is highlighted with stone inlay. This bronze piece is of rare and delicate quality.
