Brian King (b.1942) THE DOUBLE HELIX bronze on black marble base; (from an edition of 4) 15 x 9½ x 3¾in. (38.10 x 24.13 x A maquette for a large sculpture of the same title by Brian King which is located outside the Smurfit Institute of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. Since 2006 TCD has awarded The Dawson Prize in Genetics to geneticists of international prominence. The prize was established by a gift from George Dawson (1927-2004), the founder of the Department of Genetics at TCD and is presented in the form of a gold miniature of the present work. P
John Henry Foley RA RHA (1818-1874) STATUES OF OLIVER GOLDSMITH & EDMUND BURKE (A PAIR) base metal electroplated in copper with bronze patina; (2) each inscribed 'Elkington & Co. Founders / J.H. Foley R.A. London' at base 19 x 8 x 6in. (48.26 x 20.32 x 1 Dimensions of bases: 6.5 by 6.5ins. The full size bronzes of these figures were erected outside the front gates of Trinity College Dublin in 1863 and 1868 respectively. The original plaster models for each are in the Birmingham City Art Gallery. Foley was one of the most eminent sculptors of the Victorian era. Strickland considered him 'at his best, superior to any of his contemporaries' (Dictionary of Irish Artists, Vol. I, page 359). Born in Dublin, Foley entered the RDS Drawing Schools at an early age, winning numerous prizes and medals in modelling, before going to London to further his career at the RA School. From the 1840s onwards he won numerous prestigious commissions, not least of which was the central figure of the Prince Consort for the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens, and the O'Connell Monument in Sackville Street (now O'Connell Street), Dublin. His statues of Burke and Goldsmith are likewise ranked among his most important works. P

A 17th century Continental bronze mortar. With twin double scrolling handles, anthemion bands to the foot and rim, a frieze of scrollwork and raised on a fluted socle, 11.75cm. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. No cracks or repair. Good colour and patina. Some superficial knocks and small dents only.
A Japanese Meiji period gilt bronze koro with pierced cover and twin shi shi dog mask handles. With champleve enamel decoration, blue ground having scrolling foliage and with a phoenix to the cover. Seal marks, 23.5cm high. Condition Report. To be used as a guide only. Wear to the gilding. Enamel in good order.
