§ Harry Phillips, (British, 1911-1976), The Dancer, a patinated bronze figure, dancing in a full North American Indian style head dress, unsigned 47cm (18in) Provenance: From the Zacron Collection. Exhibited: Leeds, Temple Newsam, Harry Phillips Exhibition, 3 April 1976. Harry Phillips was Head of the School of Sculpture and Pottery at Leeds College of Art from 1950. His well-known works include "Christ Triumphant" at St George's Church, Norton, Letchworth (1963); "St Michael" at St Michael's Church, Lewes, Sussex (1976); and "Saint Christopher" from St Christopher's Church, Hinchley Wood, Surrey (1975). His son, Steve Phillips, played with Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and Knopfler wrote the song “In the Gallery" about Harry Phillips. Phillips wrote in January 1976 from Lewes, "It is part of my belief that the artist should carry out every stage of the work himself and this applies particularly to bronze sculptures. They are so often spoilt in commercial foundries because of over casting and loss of 'touch' in the surface. The large castings I have had to leave to the foundries, but all the small bronzes I have cast myself".
§ Bernard Meadows, (British, 1915-2005), Maquette for large Crab Relief, polished bronze mounted on painted panel, signed with monogram in the bronze to reverse and numbered 5/6, 8½ x 16½cm (3 x 6in) Provenance: Private Collection, UK Literature: Bowness A, 1995, Bernard Meadows. Sculpture and Drawings, The Henry Moore Foundation in association with Lund Humphries, London, BM ref 123, page145 Other Notes: A British modernist sculptor who came to prominence having exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952, Meadows was one of Henry Moore's first assistants and returned to work for him towards the end of Moore's life. Moore's influence on Meadows' work is clear. However, it was at the Venice Biennale whilst exhibiting with Anthony Caro, Lynne Chadwick, and Eduardo Paolozzi, that the art critic, Herbert Read, coined the phrase, "Geometry of Fear" in reference to their work. This was in response to their more angular, aggressive style in contrast to the earlier works of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Meadows became Professor of Sculpture at the Royal College of Art from 1960 to 1980 and his students included Elizabeth Frink. During the Second World War, Meadows spent time in the Cocos Islands where he observed and made many detailed drawings of crabs. This became a recurring theme throughout his life; "I look upon birds and crabs as human substitutes, they are vehicles, expressing my feelings about human beings…..[one] is more free to take liberties with the form and to make direct statements than with the human figure: nevertheless they are essentially human". Crabs, as exoskeletal animals, blurred the boundaries between the interior and exterior and provided Meadows with a vehicle to express human emotions. In the late 1970s, Meadows came back to rework his earlier ideas, creating the Crab Reliefs as both large and smaller editions. The Fitzwilliam Museum holds a smaller version.

*Leaping Tiger Mascot of a design by Casimir Brau, having an original nickel-plated finish on bronze, good features and detail. The larger of the two sizes originally available. By family tradition this mascot was the basis of F. Gordon Crosby's Leaping Jaguar mascot, and this example was a modello of the Brau design given to him by Jaguar Cars in 1938, albeit there is not now any documentary evidence of this. The design was also in vogue for use on late vintage MGs, of which Crosby had two. 6-inches (15cms) high, not display-mounted, the nickel-plating somewhat tarnished, but should polish (1)
