Historically Interesting WW2 German Luftwaffe Log Book Grouping to Knights Cross Winner & Posthumous Oak Leaves Recipient, Oberleutnant Georg Sattler 1 (K)/LG1, Killed 30th August 1944, the grouping consists of his original log books which sadly have been damaged by fire but 95% of the information inside the books is still readable and undamaged. The first log book covers operations from 6th September 1940 until 11th March 1943, this book details operations against England and his service in the Mediterranean and North Africa. The second log book covers the period 20th May 1943 until 1st July 1944. Due to the fire damage some of the pages are loose. Accompanying the log books is Sattler’s original operational diary / performance book (Leistungsbuch) which lists his rank and the various awards he received up to the award of the Knights Cross on 5th February 1944. This book is in very good condition and records all his missions from 1940 until 1944. Accompanying the performance book is a written translation in English by aviation historian E F Cheesman. The last item in the grouping is the Luftwaffe log book of Sattler’s air gunner Hans Burmeister, who he served with from 1940 and who was also killed along with Sattler. Although two of the books have been damaged by fire this is still a very historically interesting grouping to a highly decorated Luftwaffe bomber pilot. (5 items) Georg Sattler was born in Munich on the 14th April 1917. Before joining the Luftwaffe in 1935, he worked as a goldsmith. Upon completion of his training he qualified as a Pilot. He was posted to 1st Staffel Kampfflugzeug Lehrgeschwader 1. He served with distinction during the invasion of Poland, Blitzkrieg through Belgium and France and the Battle of Britain. In April 1941 he was moved to the Mediterranean where he was involved in the invasion of Crete and Greece. During a bombing raid of the British lines in Greek Metaxas, his plane was shot down by anti-aircraft fire. He spent five days behind enemy lines before being rescued by German forces. In June 1942 he was again forced to bring his aircraft down, this time it was in the sea, and he had to swim for several hours to reach the coast. During the fighting in the Mediterranean, Sattler was recognised as an excellent bomber pilot of allied shipping, receiving the award of the German Cross in gold, January 1943. His unit was moved to the Eastern front in late 1943 where he performed heroically in actions against the Soviet Red Army and the retreat of the German forces. In February 1944 he was awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross. Later in 1944 his squadron was moved to the Western Front at Melsbroek just outside of Brussels. With the allies advancing quickly on the disguised airfield, the squadron, now equipped with the S series JU88, were ordered to relocate to an airfield in Oldenburg on the Dutch-German border. The quickness of the allied advance took the inhabitants by surprise and a speedy escape was planned, the aircrafts were only designed to have three crew members, but it is recorded that many carried five or more people. Sattlers aircraft (330715) had five other crew members including Hans Burmeister, the aircraft was observed to crash near Melsbroek with all the occupants being killed. The crew were buried with full military honours in Brussels. The remains were later exhumed and re-buried at the German war cemetery at Lommel. For his exemplary service, Georg Sattler was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross on 6th December 1944, he was the 675th person to be awarded the award. Georg Sattler’s awards for service were Pilots badge, Luftwaffe Honour Goblet (Ehrenpokal), Iron Cross 1st & 2nd class, Luftwaffe bomber operational clasp in bronze, silver, gold and with pendant, Bulgarian bravery medal, Kreta cuff band, German Cross in Gold, Knight Cross of the Iron Cross and Oak Leaves to the Iron Cross.
