Passionate about his craft, he had a deep knowledge of many areas, including bronzes, furniture, ceramics, and modern British painting. It is now housed in the Naples Archaeological Museum and has been previously identified as Plato.  The model came to prominence in the late 19th century when the Chiurazzi founders included it in their sale catalogue of antique style reproductions.

A Neapolitan bronze model of Eros riding a dolphin, early 20th century, the addorsed dolphin catching a octopus in its mouth, on a scallop shell, formally a candlestick, 41cm highCondition Report: As can be seen from the online photograph, this bronze has a dark, rough patination overall typical of Neapolitan bronzes imitating ancient sculptures.  There is a lighter patch of verdi gris beneath the right shoulder of the Eros. There are several casting faults in areas throughout, such as but not limited to,  the inside and outside of the dolphin tail, a circular hole to the raised right forearm of Eros, the left lower leg of Eros and the edge of the scallop shell base.  There is a small historical loss to the tip of one octopus tentacle.  The back edge of the dolphin tail in the centre has a vacant hole where a candle socket has previously been fitted but now lacking.

James Mathieson, Scottish, 1931-2003, a life size bronze figure of Phaethon, depicted falling to his death having been struck from Helios' chariot, signed to underside of foot Mathieson and numbered 3/12, approx. 176cm long (ARR)         Footnotes: Note: Phaethon was the ill-fated son of the Sun God Helios, who after convincing his father to swear an oath on the River Styx to grant him any wish he chose to demand to drive the Sun Chariot. He predictably lost control of the chariot and was struck from the sky by Zeus's lightning bolt after veering too close to the earth, scorching the surface and creating what is now the Sahara dessert.J W Mathieson was born in Calcutta and moved to Scotland in 1947. His most famous public monument being his figure of William Hogarth and his Pug at Chiswick High Street, West London, unveiled by Ian Hislop and David Hockney in 2001.

A pair of French gilt-bronze mounted verde antico marble urns, of Louis XVI style, late 19th century, surmounted with a berried finial above domed integral cover with a pierced frieze, flanked by shaped foliate handles above floral swags, on circular socle and square base, 31cm high (2)Condition Report: Both urns with professional restorations with composition in-fill and over colouring in areas overall, most only visible under a UV light.  This includes, but is not limited to, a small section by the mount of one cover, areas above the floral swags, an oval bruise to the body of one urn approx 4 x 2cm and repairs to both socles.  The floral swags are associated as there are small dot marks above the centre of each indicating where a different mount was previously positioned.  The body of one urn with two small chips.  The mounts with light wear.

Lot 281

A French bronze model of the Vendome column, c.1860, the column surmounted with a model of Napoleon in military uniform stood atop a dome surrounded by a balustrade above a spiralling relief scene of Trajan's column, on a square black slate base with a metal fence, 36cm high total   Footnotes: Note: The original Vendome column is a famous Paris monument modelled on Trajan's column in Rome and was erected by Napoleon I in 1810 to commemorate the Battle of Austerlitz. The column was designed by Lepère and Gondoin. Lepère supervised the melting down of the 1200 artillery pieces taken from the Russians and Austrians. The column comprises a stone core enrobed with 425 bronze plaques fixed to the stone with pins. A 280 metre-long frieze of bas-reliefs, designed from drawings by Bergeret, winds round the column depicting the major events of the campaign, from the camp in Boulogne to the return of the Emperor and his guard in 1806. A team of sculptors, including Boizot, Bosio, Bartolini, Ramey, Rude, Corbet, Clodion and Ruxthiel, was commissioned to execute the frieze.  The original column was surmounted with a model of Napoleon in a Roman toga, but this was taken down in 1814 in favour of a model of the Emperor in military uniform, as in this example. In the 1860's it was again replaced with a model of Napoleon in a toga, which is still present in Paris today.

After Matthieu Jacquet, French, 1545-1611, late 19th century, a French bust of Henri IV, modelled wearing a laurel wreath and elaborate ruff, on a later mottled grey marble circular plinth, 18cm high overallFootnotes: Note: the present lot derives from a bronze bust by Mattieu Jacquet in the Louvre, Paris, inventory ref: MI 38.Condition Report: This bust is in good overall condition.  It has an even dark brown patination with minor wear/rubbing to the extremities in areas.  It has been later mounted on the marble plinth.

After Albert-Moritz Wolff, German, 1854-1923, early 20th century, a bronze group of a young girl watering horses, seated on the edge of a well with one horse drinking from a bucket that she holds on her knee while fending off the other gelding, signed A M Bonegor, 18cm high, 35cm wide, 18cm deep  Footnotes: Note: Albert-Moritz Wolff was a German artist who worked for the Russian market. He was exhibiting from around 1890 to 1910, and is associated stylistically with the body of work by Lanceray and Gavrilov that vividly illustrated the atmosphere of late 19th century Russia. He used German foundries and there are at least four variations of his signature, often incorrectly transliterated from the Cyrillic, being mistaken as Bonegor by some auctions and art sites.   Condition Report: This bronze has a mid brown patination with lightly rubbed/worn areas across the backs of the horses and the hat of the seated figure.  One horse with two small dents to the back upper leg.  This same horse has a plugged sprue hole on its back near the mane.  Originally this bronze would have had an angled counter-weight crane to one side of the base which went over the horses and hung above the trough/well.  This is now lacking and there is a coloured wax filled area approx 1.5cm in diameter where this would have been fixed.

A pair of French gilt and patinated bronze ewers, late 19th century, each with winged cherub handle, on Sienna marble square-section bases, 43cm high (2)Provenance: Property of a Gentleman removed from a Knightsbridge Apartment.Condition Report: Each urn is loosely attached to its socle and can be wiggled. Each urn has some deep scratches to the body, one going across the gilt band around the urn. The marble bases with some losses to the corners and edges.

A pair of French gilt and patinated bronze four-light figural wall appliques, of Empire style, second half 19th century, the backplate with flambeau finial above central figure holding aloft four scrolling branches, 45cm high, 26cm wide (2)Provenance: Property of a Gentleman removed from a Knightsbridge Apartment.It is the buyers responsibility to ensure electrical items are professionally rewired for use.        Condition Report: Wear/rubbing to the gilded elements to be expected with age and use.  The black patination to the figures has been refreshed.  The wires run up the outside of the branches and the bobeche and sockets have been drilled.  The figures are cast in sections with joins at the top of the legs and below the arm bands.  A qualified electrician should examine the lot before use.

A French gilt and patinated bronze figural mantel clock, mid-19th century, modelled as a young man carrying a hay bale on his back while leaning on a cane and holding a pipe, on a plinth base with gilt-bronze mounts and four bun feet, the white enamel dial with Roman numerals and outer minute, signed Gerard a Paris, with Brequet hands, the twin train movement striking a bell on the hour and half hour, approx. 35.8cm high, 28cm wide, 10.5cm deepProvenance: Property of a Gentleman removed from a Knightsbridge Apartment.Please note that Roseberys do not guarantee the working order or time keeping of any timepiece.Condition Report: Case: There is tarnishing to the bronze, particularly to the base, with engrained dirt, finger prints and scratches. The underside with two bun feet missing and the remaining four feet are heavily scratched. Base is marked and tarnished to underside. There is a crack approx. 5cm long with other minor cracks to the reverse of the base. Minor tarnishing to figure and clock case, with minor losses to gilt on the bale and to the trousers. Dial: There are hairline cracks to the dial, to includes hairlines issuing from the winding holes to between 7 and 8 and through 5, and another through 9. There are scratches and areas of dirt throughout, especially to dial centre. The signature is rubbed. Hands are slightly bent.Movement: Some minor tarnishing and scratching to backplate. Possible replaced bell. Suspension spring and pendulum leader missing. There is no pendulum or key. Please note that Roseberys do not guarantee the working order or time keeping of any timepiece.

A pair of large French gilt and patinated bronze three-light wall appliques, of Louis XVI style, late 19th/early 20th century, the backplates surmounted with a ribbon tied bow and tassels above scrolling foliate branches with eagle heads, above tassel terminals, 117.5cm high, 43cm wide (2)Provenance: Property of a Gentleman removed from a Knightsbridge Apartment.It is the buyers responsibility to ensure electrical items are professionally rewired for use.  Condition Report: Generally in good overall condition with minor wear to the gilded elements.  The black patination to the backplates has been refreshed.  The wires run up the outside of the branches and the bobeche and sockets are drilled.  The flambeau finials and ribbon-tied elements are possibly later associated.  Each backplate is drilled at the top and bottom to secure to the wall. A qualified electrician should examine the lot before use.

A pair of cut-glass and gilt-bronze twin-light candelabra, in the manner of Apsley Pellatt, 19th century and later, the waisted hob-nail cut nozzles and lobed pans hung with beads and pendants, the baluster columns surmounted with sunburst masks, 42cm high (2)Provenance: Property of a Gentleman removed from a Knightsbridge Apartment.Condition Report: There are numerous areas of damage to include:One of the candelabra with three lustres detached from the sunburst mask but still present, with chips to end and loss of screw attachment to each, one further lustre is missing. Others have been reattached with glue so are slightly loose. There are chips and scratches to the hob-nail cut waist and heavy scratches and chips to petals above knops. Wear to bronze mounts. The detachable sunburst mask is sitting slightly forward. Sconces are slightly loose and there are chips to edges of glass surrounds.The other with six lustres broken off and missing. Others have been reattached with glue. The sunburst mask sits crooked as the stem is loose. There are chips and scratches to the hob-nail waist and to the drops. The base is heavily scratched to underside. There are other minor chips and scratches to glass and minor wear to bronze mounts.
