Impressed `COPYRIGHT BY SUSSE FRES` to sides of base. Base also marked `Robert Fres Sculpt.` to side of base. Literature: P. Cadet, Susse Frères, 150 Years of Sculpture, Rugby, 1992, p. 214, similar pair illustrated in 1905 Sales Catalogue. Each measures approx. 25 1/2" height (64.7cm). Total weight of 14.6 kilograms.

Raised plaque to front of base bears the title of the work `BARDE`. Also inscribed is `2e Gd Prix de Rome`. Debut was awarded the 2nd prize in 1851 as runner up to 1st place winner Gustave Adolphe Désiré Crauk / Crauck (FRENCH, 1827 - 1905). The `Prix de Rome` is a program of rewards for exemplary work in the arts by the French government as early as 1673 for sculpture. Measures 14 1/4" height (36.1cm). Total weight of 3369 grams.
