A North European black bear (Ursus americanus) skull desk stand,late 19th century, by Edwin Ward, Wigmore Street, London, with gilt bronze-mounted bears, a removable chamberstick, an inkwell and two wooden pen trays,26cm wideEdwin and Rowland Ward were taught taxidermy by their father and both followed him into the trade. Edwin, the elder son, set up his own business in about 1865, initially at 11 Thayer Street, Manchester Square, London; he then moved to Wigmore Street and remained there until he retired in 1879. Edwin was the first member of the family to receive the patronage of the royal family when, in 1872, he mounted the head of a fine wild white bull shot at Chillingham Park in Northumberland by the Prince of Wales.
