F 54, Abb.- Blumenthals Figuren sind geprägt von einem in sich ruhenden Menschenbild, welches sich mit einfachen Posen auseinandersetzt- Galt in den 1930er-Jahren als einer der begabtesten jungen Bildhauer seiner Generation- 36-jährig im 2. Weltkrieg gefallen und posthum 1955 Teilnehmer der documenta I in KasselDas Gesamtwerk Hermann Blumenthals ist angesichts seines frühen, tragischen Todes vergleichsweise umfangreich und lässt erahnen, welch außergewöhnliche Werke noch hätten folgen können. Den Grundstein seiner Ausbildung legt der 1905 in Essen geborene Blumenthal durch eine vierjährige Lehre als Steinbildhauer, die er 1924 abschließt. 1925 beginnt er ein Studium an den Vereinigten Hochschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst in Berlin, zunächst bei Wilhelm Gerstel, ab 1927 dann bei Edwin Scharff, dessen Meisterschüler er 1929 wird. Kurz darauf, im Jahr 1930, erhält Blumenthal den Großen Stadtpreis der Preußischen Akademie der Künste und darf, damit verbunden, im Oktober 1931 ein neunmonatiges Arbeitsstipendium an der Villa Massimo in Rom antreten. Die Vorliebe zur Darstellung des menschlichen Körpers, bevorzugt als Akt, entspringt sicherlich dem Eindruck der vielen antiken Vorbilder, die er in jener Zeit studieren kann. Zurück in Deutschland bezieht er zunächst ein Atelier in einer Fabrikhalle bei Potsdam. 1935 erfolgt der Umzug in die Ateliergemeinschaft in der Klosterstraße, Berlin-Mitte, zu der auch Käthe Kollwitz gehört. Zu seinen Künstlerkollegen wie Gerhard Marcks, Werner Gilles, Werner Heldt und Toni Stadler entwickelt Blumenthal eine enge persönliche und künstlerische Beziehung. 1937 werden seine Werke erstmalig von den Nationalsozialisten beschlagnahmt. Hermann Blumenthal befindet sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt eigentlich auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens. Während eines zweiten Italienaufenthaltes entsteht in Rom auch der hier angebotene "Campagnahirt". Er hat den Blick offen nach vorne gerichtet, so als ob er den Geschehnissen seiner Zeit mit Ruhe und Sicherheit entgegenblicken würde. Im Mai 1940 wird Hermann Blumenthal zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen und bemüht sich verzweifelt um Aufträge für offizielle Bauten, die ihm die Entlassung aus der Armee ermöglichen würden. Besonders tragisch ist, dass er den Auftrag für ein Relief an der Krakauer Burg ergattert - die Freistellung vom Kriegsdienst erreicht seine Truppe jedoch leider zu spät. Am 17. August 1942 fällt der 36-jährige Hermann Blumenthal in Russland. Die posthume Teilnahme an der documenta I in Kassel 1955 sowie die große monografische Ausstellung "Sterngucker. Hermann Blumenthal und seine Zeit" im Georg-Kolbe-Museum Berlin, anlässlich des 100. Geburtstages des Künstlers im Jahr 2006, zeigen die Wichtigkeit dieses außergewöhnlichen jungen Talentes für die deutsche Bildhauerei des 20. Jahrhunderts. Erläuterungen zum Katalog

A LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH BRONZE AND CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL MANTEL CLOCK modelled as an elephant raised on an onyx base supporting a spherical champleve enameled case enclosing a floral enamel dial with Arabic numerals fronting a spring driven eight-day movement with platform escapement20cm highThe clock is in good working condition having a good action. The clock is loose on the elephants back. There is no damage to the enamel, the bronze is worn on the edges, the marble has small chips on the edges, the clock doesn’t come with a winding key.

AN ENGLISH REGENCY ORMOLU, BRONZE AND WHITE MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK the classical case with seated female scholarly figures reading and flanking a scroll sided drum head dial within a bead edged scroll decorated bezel enclosing a matted Roman chapter ring with ornate hands enclosing an openwork centre beneath a winged eagle cresting and fronting a chain driven eight day fusee timepiece movement with anchor escapement; the stepped white marble rectangular base with cast swagwork decoration - raised on turned feet. Maker's signature to the left handbook.37.5cm wide 29cm highThe pendulum is not original and there is a hairline crack in the marble base on the reverse side. The movement ticks when wound but may need a service. The gilding is in good condition and there are no losses to the marble.

A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE EARLY 19TH CENTURY FIGURAL BRONZE AND SIENNA MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK the patinated bronze sculpture modelled as a Classical Greek philosopher holding a stick standing beside a bronze mounted Sienna marble column with relief bronze ring showing the signs of the zodiac enclosing a 3.5" enamel dial with Roman numerals fronting an eight-day spring driven movement with outside countwheel and silk suspension striking the hours/half hours on a bell89cm highThe clock is in very good original condition having very good color and patina to the bronze figure. The sienna marble is in good order with no losses or breaks. The dial has no cracks or restoration. The movement is complete, chiming on the bell with the original pendulum but it is dirty and would require a service. We do not guarantee mechanical parts or functionality.
