See Evans, J., The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain and Ireland, London, 1881, pp.76-84, and figs.56-68, for similar types. Lot 1272

2nd-1st millennium B.C. Comprising four pieces of copper 'bun' ingot, two showing characteristic edge cross-section. 556 grams total, 28-58 mm (1 1/8 - 2 1/4 in.). UK gallery, early 2000s. These bun ingots were cast in shallow saucer depressions cut into rock where the copper ore was mined and smelted; they were then carried and traded across Europe before being broken up, melted down and having tin added to form bronze alloy; fragments such as these are frequently found as part of smith's hoards of, usually, worn out tools, weapons and raw material from the Late Bronze Age. [4, No Reserve]

Lot 1276

11th-9th century B.C. With ogival sides, a raised mid-rib and lozenge-shaped shoulders, remains of the tang with a hole for the insertion of the fastening rivet. Cf. British Museum accession no.1890,1113.6, for one of the swords from Charenton Hoard, France; see also Gagnière, S.,Germand, L., Granier, I., Les Armes et les outils protostoriques en bronze du Musée Calvet D'Avignon, Avignon, 1963, no.37, for a similar blade. 223 grams, 31.5 cm (12 3/8 in.). Acquired in the late 19th century. Ex private collection, Liverpool, UK. Helios Gallery Antiquities, Wiltshire, UK. Private collection, Preston, UK. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Helios Gallery no.H3163r. The top of the sword is missing, and the shape of the blade resembles that of swords of the late European Bronze Age, but the particular shape of the central groove of the blade, which forms a three-quarter median rib before tapering towards the point, could lead one to believe that the sword was of the antennal type with median rib, like the sword from Central Italy preserved in the Calvet Museum, Avignon. [No Reserve]

Lot 1278

Late Bronze Age, 1200-800 B.C. The outer faces decorated with three parallel lines, single side loop and convex cutting edge; socket chipped at one side. Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection. The shape of the blade resembles a willow leaf with its widest part situated in the middle of its length. The origin of this shape is still not very clear. It was probably invented somewhere in Anatolia or the Near East. In the Aegean it appears for the first time in LH II A, before spreading around Western Europe.

Couchant with feet forwards and modelled with two extended T-shaped toggle lugs, curled tail, stylised detailing to the coat and facial features, mouth open, attachment socket to back. Cf. Ornamented bronze knife handles became an integral part of medieval culture also in Finno-Ugric lands. Lot 1364

4th-7th century A.D. Cup-shaped in sheet gold with applied filigree detailing and granule clusters. See Meaney, A., Anglo-Saxon Amulets and Curing Stones, Oxford, BAR British Series 96, 1981, p.166-168, for discussion of the type. 1.19 grams, 13 mm (1/2 in.). From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s. Pendants in the form of miniature buckets have been found in a number of pagan Anglo-Saxon and Viking contexts and are generally made of bronze or iron, with gold examples being rare; three gold examples were found with the hoard from Hoen, Norway. Bronze bucket amulets have been found at Driffield in Yorkshire, and Vimose bog in Denmark, among other places. In form they represent wooden buckets bound with bronze or iron bands which have been found in Anglo-Saxon and Viking graves and are believed to have held mead or ale and were used to replenish the cups from which warriors drank. As amulets they probably represent the ecstatic power of alcoholic drink and the role of women as the dispensers of these precious beverages. A similar bracelet in bronze, with deep wavy furrows and stamped rows of circles, was found in grave 1081 of the Birka Necropolis. [No Reserve] [For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price]

Lot 1465

9th-11th century A.D. With central dome and upturned ends, ribbed and textured detailing to the obverse, catch and pin-lugs to the reverse. Cf. The copper-alloy pendant appears to be cross-shaped with the top arm forming the suspension loop. It is therefore possible to consider the pendant to be T-shaped, in the form of the Greek letter Tau. These Tau crosses often acted as miniature reliquaries which are thought to have contained a herbal compound that was used to treat the symptoms of St Anthony's fire. [2]

Lot 1616

Tiribilli, E., The bronze figurines of the Petrie Museum from 2000 BC to AD 400, London, 2018, p.249, for a bronze statuette with its original wooden throne and base. 179 grams, 13.5 cm (5 3/8 in.). Lot 534

8th-7th century B.C. With a simple curved arch decorated with engraved banding; integral pin and large catchplate. Cf. Richardson, A., In search of the Samnites: Adornment and Identity in Archaic Central Italy, 750-350 B.C., figs.5.13, p.54, for similar simple arch fibula. 32 grams, 88 mm (3 1/2 in.). From the family collection of a Surrey gentleman since before 1960. Chronological and geographical variations of the Italic fibulae are dependent on the decoration of the arch. The use of bronze and iron (and even silver and electrum in the south) is less of a factor within the individual type series than it is for the overall trend of styles. The rare use of iron in the seventh century and increasingly frequent use throughout the sixth century never rivalled the popularity of bronze, which remained more practical and convenient for working with familiar techniques. [No Reserve]

Lot 604

1st-4th century A.D. Comprising two lead spindlewhorls, a bronze stylus with hooked eraser; a bronze terret ring. 93 grams total, 25-57 mm (1 - 2 1/4 in.). Acquired on the UK art market. 4th-5th century A.D. With wide flat bottom decorated inside with incised concentric circles, the internal concave surface retaining some of the silver coating; the central umbilicus still visible. Cf. Tassinari, S., La Vaisselle de Bronze, Romaine et Provinciale, au Musée des Antiquités Nationales, XXIXe supplément de Gallia, Paris, 1975, item 88, for a type with same dimensions (22cm diameter). 860 grams, 22.8 cm wide (9 in.). From the family collection of a Surrey gentleman since before 1960. This vessel (lanx) was part of Roman and provincial bronze instrumentum domesticum, i.e. culinary or domestic utility ware. Such cooking vessels are rare in such condition: some are found in central and northern Gaul, Italy, in Pannonia, Germany and in Britain. Specimens of precious metal, richly decorated and chiselled, sometimes adorned with reliefs, are mentioned by ancient authors such as Cicero (Ad Att., VI,1,13) and Ovid (Pont.III,5,20). [No Reserve]

Lot 761

See PAS WAW-FFAE08, WILT-98EBB0, WILT-695751, for Roman duck brooches. 2.9 grams, 25 mm (1 in.). Found The Rodings, Essex, UK. Excavating an archaeological site at Salthouse in October 1980, Alex Vines found a bronze bird thought to be part of a Roman duck brooch. The shape was slightly different from our specimen, but it confirmed that brooches shaped as ducks were used by civilians in 2nd-3rd century Roman Britannia. The zoomorphic brooches were typical in Britain as many of the birds shown were either representative of native birds or of ducks. [No Reserve]

Lot 853

Acquired on the UK art market. Property of a Ruislip, UK, gentleman, by inheritance. The fragment of the simpler Maltese cross mount corresponds to the type E2 of Schulze-Dörrlamm, here with straight arms with rounded corners. It resembles the cross-shaped hinge fittings of the belt buckles from Herrera de Pisuerga and tomb 9 from El Tesorillo from Visigoth Spain, two bronze fittings from Lusitania and the buckle with busts of saints and the Greek inscription 'Light and Life' from Korbous in Tunisia. These kind of buckles were also found in male warrior graves. [4, No Reserve]
