Medieval Oil Flask.Circa, 1100 - 1300 AD. Copper-alloy, 72.38 grams. 58.15 mm. A medieval bronze flask similar in shape to the lead pilgrims ampullae, a bulbous body with slightly narrower neck. On each side is a semicircular handle with a hole through for suspension.Ref: Similar examples are recorded on the PAS database (cf. ESS-E60906). They have often been found with the name of their contents engraved on the outside.Traditional interpretations of these vessels are as flasks for holy oil. It is possible that it is from a travelling chrismatory, or set of three holy oils used in the Medieval church:oleum infirmorum for the sick; oleum catechumenorum for baptism; and chrisma or balm, used for confirmation, ordination and certain consecrations. Property of an Essex collector.
Medieval Sword Pommel. Circa, 1300-1400 AD. Bronze, 178.55 grams. 53.35 mm. A "Wheel" type pommel, class VIII. In cross-section the pommel appears as a squat cylinder with an enlarged mid-section which gives the pommel a bi-conical form with the tops of the cones truncated and a broad flat band, which forms the middle of the pommel, joining the two truncated conical halves. The broad flat band area of the pommel has two rounded rectangular holes directly opposite each other and one larger in size than the other. These holes form the opening for securing the tang of the sword in place. Ref: Mediaeval Swords from Southeastern Europe. Material from 12th to 15th Century, 2007, by Marko Aleksić. Property of an Essex based collector.
Medieval Ring.Circa 12th - 14th century AD. Copper-alloy, 3.10 grams. 24.97 mm. Bronze Age Votive Axe.Circa .2150 - 1500 BC. Bronze, 4.47 grams. 35.38 mm. A miniature Bronze Age flat axe. Byzantine Reliquary CrossCopper-alloy, 31.32 grams. 76.70 mm. Circa 10th-12th century AD. A large two part two part, hinged bronze reliquary cross, which is complete and apparently unopened. This unusual cross portrays, on one side, Christ with arms extended, wearing a robe (columbium) with cross above. On the other side is a representation of the Virgin Mary, also with arms extended and hands raised (“orans”). The reliquary was probably thought to contain a splinter of the True Cross. Ref: “Kreuz und Kruzifix” (Diocese Museum of Friesing, Germany, 2005) – pgs 174-175. A similar iconography is depicted in Pitarakis “Les Croix-Reliquaries Pectorales” Number 129. Byzantine representations of the Crucifixion which show Christ wearing a robe are normally earlier than those in which he wears a loincloth. Property of an English collector, purchased from a London dealer mid 1980's.
Medieval Figural Bronze.Circa 12th - 14th century AD. Bronze, 1.7 kg. 165mm x 80mm x 40mm. A large piece of medieval sculpture depicting a naked female figure reclining on an arch with acanthus leaf and front scroll. The figure is very similar to many images of mermaids seen in wood and stone carvings of the same period although the piece we have here shows no obvious sign of a tail. The surviving piece was once part of a much larger sculpture or furnishing of a church such as a large candle stick. If the latter, then its likely to be a casualty of the reformation under Henry VIII. This lead to churches and cathedrals being stripped of their wealth and most of the Catholic works of art destroyed. A Derbyshire metal detecting find. Ref: for similar styles see: Molesworth, 1951. Sculpture In England (Medieval). Property of a detectorist.
