After Pietro Tacca (1577-1640): A pair of andirons with Moorish slaves, patinated bronze, most probably 17th C. and later--H 72 - 70 cmÊ H 45 - 42 cm (without the base) Ê Ê The sculptures most probably 17th C. The bronze bases of a later date (19th C.). Ê The inspiration for these sculptures was found at the 'Monumento dei Quattro Mori' (The Monument of the Four Moors), located at Piazza Micheli in Livorno and completed in 1626 to commemorate the victories of Ferdinand I of Tuscany over the Ottomans. The monument was created by the famous Italian sculptor Pietro Tacca and it takes its name from the four bronze statues of 'Moorish slaves' at the base of the monument, which represent the four corners of the world (link). A pair of Chinese bronze vases, each with cylindrical stems and shouldered circular bodies, raised with entwined dragons, each with four and five claws, with further etched and raised flowers, on circular feet, four character marks beneath, 26cm H. (2) Upon initial inspection vase one should in theory have had a second pair of claws towards the end of the tail around the neck but they are missing. Vase two has a similar issue with a single claw missing in the same place, around the body there is one small loss to the rear of a dragon's head and a fracture to the metal around the neck.

AFTER HOWARD WHITTAKER bronze sculpture - 'Seabiscuit', the famous American race horse with Johnny 'Red' Pollard Up, base bears signature and copyright date 2001, on black marble plinth base, 59cms long x 24cms wide x 55cms high ~Auctioneer's Note: This bronze represents Red Pollard on Seabiscuit on the occasion of the famous head to head race against War Admiral at the Pimlico racecourse in Baltimore on the 1st November 1938, the race was promoted by the media as a David and Goliath / West Coast v East Coast battle. Seabiscuit, the underdog, was of small stature but despite this disadvantage, overcame War Admiral by four lengths to the applause of 40,000 race go-ers and 40 Million radio listeners including Franklin D Roosevelt, it was perceived as a symbol of hope during the great depression.
