Ca. 800 to 500 BC. Northern Europe, Celtic culture, Late Bronze Age socketed ae head with loop. An excellently-preserved example of a cast bronze axe head. The head is socketed, with an ovoid opening for a handle. The blade has two long, cast, shallow grooves on each side. There is a slight collar around the socket, and two fastening loop on either side of the blade that would have helped affix the axe head to its wooden handle. The hollow socket was a technological innovation, allowing economical use of bronze while still making a strong weapon. Ca. 1055 A.D. Extremely rare bronze Medieval oil lamp with 2 spouts , elaborately hand carved and with silver inlay, exquisite example. This feline is highly stylized, with hooves rather than paws and geometric motifs incised into its back. The proportions are purposefully manipulated, particularly the ratio between the head and the body. The neck is pierced and the facial features are deliberately simplified, with a prominent nose and whiskers. The neck itself is hinged so that the oil can be poured into the hollow body. Most metal oil lamps from this period have just one or two spouts, so the inclusion of four, which project from the front of the feline’s body, is highly unusual.
