A LAOTIAN BRONZE RECLINING FIGURE OF BUDDHA 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY FROM VIENTIANE With a deep brown patina, the figure reclines in parinirvana on a rectangular dais with a double lotus border, his face is tranquil and smiling, his right arm supports his head and his left lies in a relaxed posture, 4.5kg, 31.5cm. The subject matter of this image is the passage of the Buddha into Nirvana. He lies down on a royal couch in the sala grove of the Malla kings beside the Hirannavati River. Surrounded by his faithful monks he utters his final words: "Everything is subject to change; strive on without delay" and at dawn on the following day passed into the great Nirvana. The Laotian kingdom of Lan Xang or Lan Chang was established during the 14th century and ruled by Thais. Its northern capital of Luang Prabang was subjected to cultural influences from the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, while its southern capital, Vientiane, absorbed Khmer and Ayutthaya motifs. A CHINESE BRONZE MODEL OF A BUDDHIST LION DOG LATE MING DYNASTYHe holds a ribbon in his mouth and rests his front paw on a brocade ball, 5.4kg, 28cm. Provenance: from the family collection of Henry Ernest Leetham (1861-1923), and Kathleen and Noel Terry (d.1980). The original Terry family furniture is on display at Fairfax House in York; it was donated to the York Civic Trust after Noel’s death in 1980. Henry Leetham is recorded by R Davids and D Jellinek, Provenance, p.290, as a client of both Bluett's and Sparks between 1914 and 1927.

STUTZUHR MIT BEWEGLICHEM AUGE GOTTES. Kumperger, Philipp. TittmoningDatierung: Ende 18. Jh. Technik: Kasten Mahagoni, versilberte Bronze, Messing, farbloses Glas u.a. Beschreibung: Rechteckiger Kasten auf gedrückten Ballenfüßen. Auf den Ecken Pilaster mit großen Voluten, oben halbrunder Abschluss und an den vier Seiten kleine Filialen aufgesetzt. Kasten auf drei Seiten verglast, vorne mit scharnierter Tür und rückseitig mit vertikalem Schub. Frontal große Messingplatine mit fein durchbrochenen und versilberten Ornamenten in den Zwickeln. Zentral darüber das ebenfalls versilberte Auge Gottes, umschlossen von einem Dreieck als Symbol der Trinität und mit großem Strahlenkranz. Das Auge aus Glas und über einen Mechanismus mit dem Pendel verbunden und beweglich. Versilberter Ziffernkranz mit römischen Ziffern und arabischer Minuterie. In der Mitte gravierte Weckscheibe mit arabischen Zahlen. Auf 6 Uhr die Signatur. Zwischen vergoldeten Platinen mit vier kräftigen Eckpfeilern Tagesläuferwerk mit Spindelgang, drei feststehenden Federhäusern. Viertelstunden- und Stundenschlag auf zwei übereinanderliegenden Glocken, Zugrepetition. Pendel mit Fadenaufhängung. Maße: 57,5x40,5x19cm. Marke: Auf Frontplatine signiert "Philippus Kumperger Tittmoning". Eine weitere Uhr des Meisters Philipp Kumperger befindet sich in der Gründungssammlung des Deutschen Museums.
