Commemorative and Exhibition Medals (13) 19th-20thC collection, including large silver issues 1897, 1911 and 1935 (VF-GVF), large bronze issues 1897, 1902 and 1911 (GVF to EF), large copper 1897 aEF, etc, housed in four Lindner trays in good condition, with a somewhat perished outer carrying case.
British Political Medallion, bronze d.52mm: 'GWYLLIM LLOYD WARDLE ESQ. M.P., A MOST MAGNANIMOUS, FIRM, CANDID, AND INDEPENDENT PATRIOT.' portrait three-quarter facing. / 'THE DUTY WHICH I OWE MY COUNTRY IS PARAMOUNT TO EVERY OTHER CONSIDERATION. SEE Mr WARDLE'S SPEECH ON THE CHARGES AGs H.R.H. THE DUKE OF YORK, MARCH. 8. 1809', nEF, edge knock and marks. Gwyllim Lloyd Wardle was a Welsh Army Officer, M.P. for Okehampton, and a radical campaigner. He was the most prominent in prosecuting a case against Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany in 1809, then the Commander in Chief of the Army, whom he accused of personal corruption due to his scandalous relationship with Mary Anne Clarke. Wardle lost the case but the Duke was forced into retirement. Wardle was later accused and convicted of conspiracy with Mary Anne Clarke against the Duke, and was not re-elected after the dissolution of Parliament in 1812.
Mid-Victorian bronze medallion, 45mm., Young lady seated on rock right, beehive? behind, legend:- DILIGENTIA VINCIT OMNIA, reverse reads:- AWARDED FOR GENERAL IMPROVEMENT, a good strike but it seems artists name in exergue was never completely struck up, EF with a ditto of 44mm. with a naked discus thrower, right, reverse:- Coat of Arms resting on ribbon with legend SPIRITUS INTUS ALIT, in exergue PINCHES LONDON, EF, both School medallion? British Commemorative Medallions (2): Barber Beaumont Institution Medal 1841 bronze d.55mm pitted VF in a glass-backed yellow metal (tests as 9ct gold) collar mount with historical inscription; plus a Barber Beaumont 'Duke of Cumberlands Sharpshooters' Medal bronze d.41mm, with similar yellow metal (tests as 9ct) collar mount with inscription.
Arnhem & Airborne interest, a selection of items, some named to Major David Allsop who was second in command 1st Airborne Recce Sqn at Arnhem, a cigarette case, named inside & dated 1944, this with Para badge to front, a Pegasus patch and Parachute 3 s/title cut from uniform, ribbon bar, 39-45 & F&G group of four, a Red Beret, this with named label, possibly slightly later, a cigarette ashtray (named). He managed to evade capture at Arnhem. He was also awarded the Dutch Bronze Lion with citation but this not with the grouping. Born 4.8.1917 Died 9.9.1987. mostly GVF
A navy officer's dagger dating: second quarter of the 19th Century provenance: France Curved, single-edged blade, with deep fullers at the back, of triangular section, finely engraved with warriors, trophies and flowers on both sides, a cartouche with remains of the writing "Klingenthal" at the base, on one side, and dated "1831" on the other. Small, gilt, bronze quillon, with quillons engraved with a spiral, smooth ring-nut. Slightly-curved, ebony grip, checkered on almost all the surface. Brass cap with spherical button. Brass scabbard with copper button. dimensions: length 29,3 cm.
A scarce Phurbu dating: late 19th Century provenance: Tibet Typical, triangular, bronze blade with writings; partially gilt, silver grip, decorated with green stones, rubies, corals and cabochon turquoises; pommel depicting three gods' faces made of sculpted ivory and featuring a vajra crown at the top. dimensions: length 23 cm.
A shin-gunto dating: second quarter of the 20th Century provenance: Japan Single-edged blade with fullers, stamps and marked with numbers at the forte. Brass habaki. Bronze tsuba. Aluminium grip, similar to same and tsukaito, partially painted in brown. A hook at the back. Iron scabbard with one ring. dimensions: length 91,7 cm.
