A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT SERAPHIM OF SAROV, CIRCA 1903. Here St. Seraphim is seen kneeling in prayer within a forest clearing upon a rock. He wears a cast bronze crucifix around his neck, holds a lestovka (prayer rope) and blesses himself before his beloved icon of the Mother of God (his joy of joys) which hangs in a tree. At his feet, a hat, bread sack, gloves and ax. The borders ornately incised and painted to simulate enamel. Verso with backstamp from the noted icon workshop of Mikhail Semenovich Barakov, Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31.2 x 26.8 cm).

A UNIQUE TSAR ALEXANDER III RELATED RUSSIAN ICON, 1888. The offered icon is related to the survival of the Tsars family after the train derailment on which he and his family were passengers, near the Borki station in present day Ukraine on their return trip home to St. Petersburg from a visit to the Crimea. At top center, Christ is depicted watching over the gathering of saints below him. On the right the names saints of the Imperial family are depicted, Alexander Nevsky, Maria Magdalena, Nicholas, George, Xenia, Mikhail and Olga. On the left a gathering of eight additional saints whose feast day is celebrated on October 17th, the same day of the train accident, Sts. Cosmas and Damian, the Prophet Hosea, Andrew of Crete, Longinus, the Prophet Lazarus, and Leontius. The lower margin inscribed, "In Memory of the Miraculous Survival of the Family of Tsar Alexander III on 17 October 1888".  10.75 inches x 9 inches (27 x 23 cm). Together with an original bronze table medal commemorating this event, as issued in 1888.

The wood panel set with ten cast bronze icons dated from circa 1700 to 1850, comprising an icon of The Mother of God Joy to All Who Sorrow, St. Nicholas, St. John the Theologian, two images of the Kazan Mother of God, two pectoral crosses (circa 1750), a triptych of the Deisis (circa 1700), and two icons of selected saints. Icons such as the offered lot are thought to represent receptacles for various icons passed down upon the death of a family member and then displayed together in the icon corner, so as to recall their ancestors during prayer. Smallest 2.25 inches x 1.5 inches (5.7 cm x 3.7 cm) to largest 6.5 inches x 4 inches (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm). Frame size 13.75 inches x 11.75 inches (34.5 x 30 cm).

The sectioned porcelain sphere oil font painted with scenic cartouches of cherubs on a bleu celeste ground with gilt foliates mounted with nine scrolled acanthus arm candle brackets with bleu celeste drip pans below gilt socket terminals, the whole suspended from three gilt bronze chains interspersed with bleu celeste porcelain bead and embossed gilt bronze spindles.
