The account of their capture by the Bombay Castle, whose Captain was John Hamilton II of Sundrum, reads as follows: Monday August 4th At 1/2 past 6am the Neptune made the signal for seeing 4 strange sail bearing NW. At 8 the Comr. made the signal "Know the Dorsetshires opinion of the strangers" who ans'd. "Suspicious". At 5' past, he made the signal "to know ours" Ans'd "Suspicious". At1/2 past 8 he made the signal for Ships to windward to bear down. At 9 the general signal to chace ships in view & to denote our opinion of them & their motions by appro. private signal & be careful not to part Company. At 1/2 past 9 signal to make all possible sail. At 1/2 past 10 to prepare to ingage . At 10' before 11 our signal to carry all possible sail. At 5' before 11 Do. to the Exeter.
