After Guillaume Coustou the Elder, (French 1677 - 1746), a patinated bronze model of one of the Marly Horses, late 19th century, the rearing beast restrained by a nude groom to one side, on a naturalistically cast base, inscribed COUSTOU to the maquette, 56cm high, 54cm long King Louis XV commissioned Coustou (who had already contributed several statues to the grounds at Marly) to create a pair of sculptures to flank the horse trough or pond at the Chateau de Marly's park. The works, carved from a single block of marble, were completed in the notably short time of just two years and were installed in 1745 In 1795 the Chevaux de Marly had been moved to the Place de la Concorde, narrowly escaping the chateau's demolition in the early 19th century. They remained there until 1984, before finally moving to the Louvre
An Edwardian cut and moulded glass and silver plated metal mounted eight light gasolier by F & C Osler, circa 1900 and later refitted, the baluster stem flanked by uprights with urn finials, mounted with diagonal fan and scroll spandrels descending to tubular arms, stamped F. &. C. OSLER to the circular boss, approximately 98cm high, 110cm wide Provenance: Property from a Private Collection Please note: the diagonal spandrels were discovered after the present photograph was taken, please refer to the images of the chandelier on our website for the complete arrangement.An nearly identical design with bronze fittings (as opposed to silver plate) and different shades is illustrated in the F. & C. Osler trade catalogue from their Calcutta showroom, published circa 1900 (design number 2823), where it is described as a 'richly cut crystal glass and gold bronze chandelier for kerosine'.The popularity of this type of gasolier across the Osler company is evident, as several others appear in the 1880 catalogue of the London showroom, pp. 144, 145. The wall applique No. 18894 illustrated in the same volume shares an identical combination of elements to the present chandelier, and may have been designed en suite.The Osler name is synonymous with exceptional quality, and represents a rich tradition of English 19th century glass manufacture. The firm, originally a supplier of ornaments for chandeliers, was started by Thomas Osler in Birmingham in 1807. However, it was not until Thomas' sons Follett and Clarkson took over the firm in the 1830s that the company grew to achieve worldwide renown, and Osler's 'brilliant cut glass' became popular with royalty and aristocracy across the British Empire, with additional showrooms established in London and Calcutta, India. The brothers renamed the operation 'F & C Osler & Co.' in 1852.
