WILL DAVIES (BRITISH, B. 1980)Peregrine Falcon (2022)signed with initials 'WD' (to lower front of base)Purbeck marble on an oak stand57.5cm high x 19.2cm wide x 26cm deepProvenanceThe artistFootnoteWill Davies has worked with stone, clay and bronze for twenty years. Following his early appointment as a stonemason, Will was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Scholarship to study historical stone carving at The City & Guilds of London Art School. This lead to an industrious career as a freelance sculptor, workingon a number of high profile projects and public art works, such as theprow sculpture that adorned Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee barge. Will's clients include the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Battle of BritainMemorial Trust. Today, Will is Head Mason at Winchester Cathedral and combines his love of sculpture with his passion for restoring andconserving Britain’s rich heritage and historic architecture. His responsibilities include carving ornamentations such as gargoyles and saints, the recently carved saint on the south transept gable end being a fine example. Working on the north transept, Will became closely acquainted with the Cathedral’s resident pair of nesting peregrine falcons, fondlynamed Winnie and Chester. In 2021, after fathering fifteen chicks over five years, Chester sadly passed away and Will was inspired to sculpt this majestic peregrine falcon from Purbeck marble in his memory.Condition reportThis is a unique piece. Condition is good, it is in 'as carved' condition.
Processional cross. Spain, 14th-15th centuries.Chiselled metal. The left arm is soldered with tin.Measurements: 44 x 34 cm.This type of piece was used in important liturgical events, such as processions, and was often changed when there were economic means to do so and in line with new fashions. This type of cross finial, known as "flordelisada" because of the finish of the arms, was one of the most common in Spanish silverware of the period and enjoyed a long tradition. Precious metals and materials such as gold, silver, gilded silver, enamel, precious stones, etc. were preferred, but if the parish or ecclesiastical authority could not afford to pay for them, they were made in other more humble but richer-looking materials, such as gilded copper or bronze. In the latter case, too, the fashions and techniques of silverware were followed, and striking similarities can be found in works of different materials. On this occasion we are faced with a cross worked in chiselled metal with highly decorative flordellated motifs, running along the entire profile of the piece, and decoration in the form of nailwork on its arms.

Processional cross. Spain or France, 13th century.Copper on the cross and bronze on the figure of Christ.Copper cross split at the axis.Christ possibly not original.Measurements: 57.5 x 40 cm.On this processional cross made of copper, the author has developed a whole iconographic pattern representing the last moments of Jesus' life. In the central area, the figure in relief of Christ stands out, possibly later, crucified with three nails, with a short purity cloth, flanked by the figures of the good and the bad thief, Gestas and Dimas, which are smaller than the figure of the main character. These, in turn, are flanked by Saint John the Evangelist (on the left) and the Virgin (on the right), i.e. by Calvary. In the lower part, there is a figure in a prayerful pose, which seems to represent the condemned. In the upper part of the crucified Christ the words INRI can be seen, above it another scene in which a king can be seen, i.e. the moment when Jesus is judged. The cross is crowned by a trumpeting angel. The background is decorated with soft vegetal and simple geometric engravings. This type of piece was used for important liturgical events, such as processions, and was often changed when there were financial means to do so and in line with new fashions.
